OK, you guys, this is freaking me out. Aidan came up with this weird rash on Tuesday. Being the weirdo that I am, I ran him straight to the doc, who said it was viral. Now mind you, on Tuesday it just looked like a bunch of pinpoint dots. Yesterday it was much worse. My BIL has a new baby (less than 3 months old) so I didn't want to take Aidan over there, so I took him for another opinion to a doc up the road. He concluded it was viral, but had no idea what. He ruled out fifth's disease, and hand, foot and mouth, and called it viral exanthema, but could narrow it down no further. This all started with what seemed like a cold and pinkeye. Then he developed an ear infection. Now this. Quite frankly, I've never seen anything like it. Have you guys? (Excuse the bedhead, but I started taking pictures the moment I got him out of bed, I'm sure he'll be embarassed when he's old enough to know better.) Jessie, cover Ellie's eyes!!!!

Oh my goodness...Laura....I have NEVER seen anything quite like that. I understand your freaking out....it looks painful and VERY upsetting. Is it is whole body ? Or just face.....I'd be camped out at docs office until someone cleared it up ! Good luck.....oh you poor thing....you've had quite a week !!

Rosacea? You would think a doctor could diagnose Rosacea a mile away, but it's a thought.
Poor baby, I can't believe how that has covered his entire face. Geez, nothing takes away from those blue eyes though!
What's your next step, are you taking him back in to a doctor?

Allisa,
It is worst on his face and neck. It started on his forehead, then spread all over his face and then went to his trunk, then arms and legs. They are lighter on his torso and arms and legs. So far I haven't seen any on the palms of his hands or the soles of his feet.
Believe me, the doctor has heard from me repeatedly, and his own doctor didn't seem too concerned which was why I took him for another opinion. He hasn't had his MMR yet (was due at 15 months, but was sick so he hasn't had it yet) but my doctor's office acted like it is impossible for a kid to get the measles these days. They were more than a little dismissive when I called yesterday, which prompted me to get ticked and call another doctor. He didn't completely rule measles out, but said that it is hard to be exposed to it these days. I checked the CDC's website, and while there aren't lots of cases anymore, there are still about 40 per year, most of them tied to people who have been out of the country, but there are always a few they can't figure out. I'm so p*ssed I'm going to print it out and take it to his regular doctor because they said there isn't ANY measles in the US anymore. Actually, it was the snotty nurse who told me that. Can you tell I'm not a happy mommy right now?

Jessie,
Not rosacea, but I thought maybe roseola. I checked the symptoms though, and how that rash comes about and it doesn't fit at all. Roseola starts on the trunk and then spreads to the face. Doc #2 ruled it out because of how the spots developed. Bleah. I think I'm going to call his pediatrician today, and at least have them take another look at it since it has gotten so much worse since they last saw it on Tuesday. oh, the joys of parenting.......!

Oh Baby Aidan! My first thought was an allergic reaction, any new meds or foods? We found out my daughter was allergic to zithromax because of a rash, it got way worse before it got better.
Aidan is the same little one with the awful diaper rash right? That turned out to be yeast? I would think it would be possible to get the yeast infection on his face?
Looks like a good sign that he's still drinking liquids, rashes always make me nervous about swelling in the throat.
Let us know what the good?!?! Dr. says.

I was also thinking same as Dawn.....related to the whole meds and diaper mess......does he still have that ? Is it possible.....this rash STARTED on his bottom like this.....then got to the horrible stage of open and weeping from the poops ? Oh Laura.....I feel for you.....I think docs and snotty nurses need to SEE this.....because over the phone a rash can sound like no big deal.....but this......ooooohhhhhhh....poor little guy and poor you !

Definitely not a yeast rash, doc #2 ruled that out yesterday. He did say that sometimes these things start as a bad response to a drug, but Aidan quit taking the Augmentin early Friday and the rash didn't show up until Tuesday, so he felt it unlikely. I asked if he could be reacting to the Nystatin we were using on his bottom, and he said that a topical application doesn't cause this kind of whole body response.
I'm calling the docs office right now to see if I can e-mail them a picture. Rats, no e-mail. I spoke with the nurse, told her all those spots were running together now, and she wants me to bring him back in. Funny about that, she wasn't so snippy this time around, LOL!! So, we go back at 11:00 this morning. Aidan is getting to be quite the frequent flier these days.

Doc ruled out fifths disease yesterday. He doesn't have the slapped cheek appearance or the lacy rash on his trunk and extremities. What he does have is this nasty bumpy rash all over his face, trunk, arms and legs.

I sort of thought of Fifth's disease too........but usually it looks more like the child has been slapped across the cheeks with LOTS of rash centered on the cheeks and less on the rest of the face. Aidan's rash seems to be very well distributed all over the face. It does NOT look like rosaecea. There are viral things that can cause a rash like this, and usually the docs treat the SYMPTOMS.......like something to relieve the itching and discomfort while it runs it's course. But, I'm not sure if that's what THIS rash is. I know his immune system had to be down, after all he's been through lately....so he would have been succeptible for any virus going around. I'm just not sure!
Although the rash does look a bit "yeasty", it would seem that the yeast infection would have appeared inside his mouth; rather than on his face if that was the cause. And yeast inside the mouth is easy to treat with that nasty swish and swallow stuff.
Does he have a fever?
And WOW.....what a beautiful little guy he is!!! He has the most beautiful blue eyes!

SUSAN!!!! ROTFL!!! I think he looks seriously less than cute right now, LOL!!! Trust you to see past the bedhead and the spots to his usual gorgeous self.
He has been taking Benadryl every 8 hours since yesterday, which is what doc #2 recommended. It hasn't made any difference to the appearance or his demeanor, he's still a grumpy little snot with a fever over 101. He's taking Motrin for the fever, but nothing else right now, because the two docs seem to agree that it is viral. Wish it was yeast, that would be easy to clear up. The same rash is all over his body, just not quite as red. There are no sores in his mouth.
Doctor was looking for Koplik's spots yesterday, which would be indicative of measles, and he didn't have those. I looked up measles in more detail yesterday and the Koplik's spots appear BEFORE the rash, so that doesn't help us much cuz he didn't see a doctor in the four days before the rash appeared.
Honestly, he's had runny nose, cold, fever, cough, conjunctivitis, ear infection, the yeast infection from the antibiotic and now this rash. This kid is getting his butt kicked. No wonder he doesn't have much appetite, huh? He wasn't in great shape before that darn antibiotic, but man, that thing seemed to have been the final straw.

When we found out Gracie was allergic to Zithromax, it was a lot of the same as you mentioned. I had ruled the anitbodic as the cause out because I hadn't given it to her for a few days and the rash kept getting worse. The Dr. said it can take a good while for it to run it's course.
I'd be grumpy too Aidan, that's quite a week!

Dawn,
Aidan appreciates your sympathy, LOL! Mom's getting a LITTLE bit tired of the incessant whining. No, seriously, I feel awful for him, which is why I've been so aggressive about trying to figure this out.
The drug reaction thing is one I will question more closely. I know that Zithromax continues to work in your body for five days after you take it. You take it five days, and it works for ten. I'll see if Augmentin has any qualities like that.
