Charissa, My son has had x-rays for this 2x. This is something all children for DS need to be tested for especially when they start doing sports. These tests are usually not ordered before a child turns 3 because their bones are not calcified enough to get accurate readings. Collin had his first one before he turned 3 because he was so very active. Then he had it done again after he turned three to confirm the previous results of NEGATIVE. Hope this helps Connie

This is a common x-ray for DS children. Following is a link to Dr. Leshin's site that explains it. Any child that participates in Special Olympics will be required to have this x-ray done prior to participating. Actually, if they are involved in any sporting activity they should get this x-ray to rule out any possible instability problems. If your child has a normal x-ray, that is the only one they will need, it's not the type of thing that has to be re-done on a regular basis - either there is a problem or there isn't. www.ds-health.com/aai.htmHope that helps. P.S. Jason's was negative, so I don't know what happens when there is a positive result - maybe someone else reading your post can provide input on a positive reading.

Jessie - I think the recommendations are 2 or 3 times in a lifetime - age 3, 12 (ish) and 18 (ish) -- if it's only 2 times...not sure if it's 12 or 18.
Kristen - no supposedly it shouldn't be done before age 3. I know our horseback riding place wouldnt accept results done before Meghan had officially turned 3...

Charissa, My daughter Pooja(10) had to get the x-ray done for her to participate in the sp.olympics. The x-rays came back showing positive meaning there was some fusion in her spine and a partial dislocation Were we worried!!!! We got an MRI done and the results came back negative. It was the best christmas gift we got. Rajitha

Charissa, Justin had his X-ray when he was 2 1/2- he was scheduled for T/A and the ENT wanted to make sure everything was ok prior to surgery. It came back negative but he still has to have another one when he is 5 just to be sure.

From what Aidan's ped says, it's kind of a debateable x-ray. I don't know why, but she said that it can give really false assumptions. I dunno, but Aidan has a friend his age with DS who had it done and then had to go get further testing because it was unclear if she had it or not...had to have an MRI and everything came back clean and fine. Aidan is 4 and I have the paperwork to go get his done, WHICH I NEED to do! LOL He's going to be starting horse back therapy, also, in the spring and needs it done. He has had multiple surgeries where he's been intibated and NOBODY told me to get it done before his surgeries! Hmmmmmm! Staci

Cassie's doctor wouldn't do this test until she turned 3, so she rode therapy horses before she had the x-ray.

Laura's pediatrition wants this done at age one. She is 9 months now and they tell me at each well visit she will have it at one year. I think (but am not sure) they want it done because of the car seat issue. The infants face rear because of neck stability. Laura is already 20lbs (95%for weight, 60% for height), so she meets the weight standard already.
