I know this was discussed before, so bear with me... How long of a bus ride do your kids have before they get to school? Eric gets on the bus at 7:40 am and arrives at school at 9:05am. That an hour and 25 minutes. ( and we live about 5 miles from the school). I've inquired about it, and was told they were in the amount of time that legallly a child should be on the bus. I'm not sure I buy that...gotta do some research. My poor little guy is sooooo tired when he gets home. I work, so I can't take him...I was just curious to see if anyone else has this problem.

That does seem like quite a long time considering how close you live to school!
Jason rides about 45 minutes each way and his school is about 15 miles away.

Dolly, In the mornings Collin is picked up at 8am and arrives at school before 9am. In the afternoon he gets on at 3:30 and is home before 4:15. So he probably has a 45 minute ride both ways.
It will take someone with more expertise than I to answer your question but, I thought there was a federal law that they could not be on the bus more than 1 hr for going 1 way. A few years ago they made a big deal about the pick up time and the time school started because they did not want to go over the hour mark. Connie

Connor, age 8 with severe learning disabilities and autism, gets picked up at 7.45 to get to school for 9, he get home again about 4.15. Its much too long a day in my opinion.

I agree.....seems AWFUL long ! Erin's bus ride is thankfully just minutes.....she is last picked up and first dropped off.....she is only on there for about 1 and half miles......BUT....... I got a report the other day that she was doing a LOT of head banging on the windows of the bus.....well.....I noticed that our driver has been coming earler & earlier in the morning.....and like I said....only a 2 minute drive to school and the kids can not be let off the bus 'till 8:00....so she was sitting on the bus....doing NOTHING for 15 miutes.....no wonder she was banging her head...that IS her entertainment !! So, phone calls to place today and inquire about that........

Go to your state's deparment of education website, and find the statutes on transportation. I think the federal limit is 50 minutes one way.

I am not positive BUT my district tells me the max is one hour each way, unless there is no appropriate program closer then that would be different. Chris is on the bus bout 45 min. to an hour depending on the day, traffic, road conditions and such each way BUT he goes out of district. Although we live in a very large town actually the largest town in our county and when he was in district and went to the public school he was easily on the buy a good 45 min. also. Luckily for us, Chris loves it. Have you talked to the transportation Dept. to see why so long for such a short ride?? Maybe you could start there, just a thought CC ~

Nicholas' dad and I work opposite days, so one of us is always available to take him to school and we both live just a few blocks away from the school so we just do that. But, there is a van that is available to pick up children with "disabilities", and we have been offered that route. Would something like that be available at your school? It would probably make for a much shorter ride!

Dolly, seems like they need to change their route or get another bus! LOL I could see if your school was farther away but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around school being 5 min away and he is on for that long! Do you know if he is the closest to school? Usually they pick the closest ones up last.. well, in our districts they do, or try to.
Russell use to ride longer...45 min at least. BUT.. now in our new district we are 5 min away and I think he is the last one to be picked up before school. I think they have 2 buses at least though..not just one.
Yes, there are hour rules and a good place to start is your states dept of ed site...like someone mentioned...or I'd call someone other then the bus garage.
Good luck!!!

Wow Dolly that does seem like a long time considering how close you live and Eric is so young! Chase gets on the bus at 7:05 and gets there at 8:25 and the ride home, he gets on the bus to leave at 3:00 and gets home at 4:45, he hates that ride home! On the way there he usually sleeps, I think it is too long for most of them. Alot of my students have a two hour ride! Robin

Dolly, I know you said you can't take Eric to school because of your job, but I was just wondering.......does his school have a before-school program where he could go? That would be so much more fun (I think they do games and songs, etc) than sitting on a bus so long. I was just wondering if this would be an option for you to take him to school early and let him hang out there and play? Otherwise, I'd look up the guidelines for your state to see how long a little one really is allowed to stay on a bus. If he was being bussed to a school that was a long distance from your house, it wouldn't be so bad......but a long ride to a nearby school would bug me too.
