I know alot of kids on this site have issues with hair cutting.... Well, I'm tickled to say "there is hope"! Eric is horrible at the barber's...so bad that we only get his hair cut 2x a YEAR. (I usually trim it inbetween...with much fighting from Eric). He was beginning to look like a little sheepdog..hair so long that his teacher asked me if I could please trim it because it was in his eyes. (how embarrassing). So we made an appointment with our poor ole barber, Ron. Hubby took Eric, cause I was working late and I would meet them there. I dreaded going all day...the last time we went, it was like wrestling an alligator...shoes, pants fell off, shirts unbuttoned.snot everywhere..I was sweating bullets! Imagine my surprise when I looked in the window at the shop and saw my big man sitting on Dad's lap....and NOT crying and screaming! I couldn't believe my eyes. Sure, there had been a few tears, but he actually sat still! Everyone was so surprised! And his haircut was excellant! He looked so grown up and handsome. Hopefully this is the beginning of something good with the haircutting. Just wanted to share this so those of you with the same problem can see that there is "light" at the end of the tunnel!

Oh Dolly, the description of the last haircut is MY life!!!! LOL! We had sooooo much better experiences with Ethan after we did the Wilbarger brushing program, but alas, the improvement seemed to be temporary. And brushing every two hours for eight weeks was a heck of a way to get a decent haircut. That program took over our life!
I am so encouraged to read your post - perhaps there is hope for us yet, cuz we have never had such a bad cut that his clothes came off, LOL! It doesn't help that I am a fanatic about how his hair looks - so he has to go often. We've finally found a sympathic hair stylist, and she doesnt' give up until I'm satisified with the cut no matter how he fights. It helps that I pay her $20 for a $10 haircut. I tell her it's hazard pay, LOL!

We, too, have recently experienced TWO non-stressful haircuts. Believe me, I didn't think we'd EVER get there. And the drama didn't ease off gradually. Dolly's description of Eric's haircut could EASILY have been Cole! At the last haircut, prior to the first "stress-free" one, was one of the worst. Then, just like magic, Cole seemed to forget he hated haircuts. My mom had taken Cole for the haircut, and reported how well he had done, and I of course, didn't believe it had happened. I thought she had probably drugged him prior, because I had never even seen a glimmer of hope to the previous haircuts. So, she reports this non-dramatic haircut, I don't believe her, weeks later I gear up for another "alligator wrestling session" (nicely put, Dolly! -- I always referred to it as catching a wolverine), and low and behold, NO DRAMA!! He sat quietly in the racecar chair at the local kids' haircut place, chatted with the stylist, inquired as to where the gal that had cut his hair last time was, and we walked out with balloons and lollipops. Uneventful; boring even! So, we're on a roll now. There IS hope for those kiddos that still fight it. Keep at it!

Dolly,
That is wonderful news! Sarah has finally settled down and haircuts are now only difficult instead of nearly impossible.
The last time we took Sarah to the beauty salon, the hairdresser asked us if it would be better if she came to our house. Naturally, we said YES! She has been coming to our house for the past year and a half and each time it has gotten a little easier. This lady is so understandling and patient. It helps that she has a son with special needs.
My hope is that someday she will actually enjoy getting her hair cut.
BTW, the best way I can describe how Sarah reacted to haircuts is to say she acted like someone was trying to murder her. She was terrified and fought like crazy. I do believe I have posted a couple of times asking for haircut help.

Chris, I have a son (non-Ds) that's a couple of months younger than your Sarah. He used to cry whenever I told him it was time to cut his hair. Snot and tears caked with hair clippings, but no fighting. He would sit still (though tearfully) if I agreed to use scissors instead of the buzzer and told him a story that lasted for the whole haircut. He still wants the story, but no more crying. Maybe a story (or music) would help Sarah, since your stylist comes to your home.

Assuming you are talking about Eric here and not you or the hubby:
"the last time we went, it was like wrestling an alligator...shoes, pants fell off, shirts unbuttoned.snot everywhere."
LOL!!!!
Oh yes, getting over the haircut issue is THE biggest milestone I've experienced with Jason . . . heck that's the issue that made me jump on the web and find UnoMas!
Brian still brags about it to everyone after every haircut - it was such a huge issue that he thought Jason would never get over. Being able to zip his hair off in about 5 minutes (we do not go for style, it's all about keeping it short!) was a life-changing event.
So yes, there's hope for all of you out there dealing with this phase of life.
It is kind of weird how it's an all of a sudden change on their part - we did nothing different with Jason - one day it was just simply ok with him to have it done. Go figure.
WTG Eric!!!!!!!

Jessie, It was the barber's shoes, Eric's pants, and my shirt...thank goodness I've known my barber for years! He's a great, loving, patient guy. Hubby got off easy....just some hair and a few tears on him. Hope this is the start of something good!

Chris,
We already put her in front of the tv with one of her beloved dvds. We have tried singing, reading, dancing, you name it. Believe me, it is getting better. I no longer leave her haircutting sessions soaked in sweat (both hers and mine) and covered in tears and snot.
All I can say is it is hard to believe that a child with such low muscle tone can be so dang strong!
