Ryan is going to start an after school program on Monday. I've arranged for bus transportation from school to the program. Here's my problem... the location of the program is about 4.5 miles away. Four days it will take 1 1/2 hours to get there, and one day 2 1/2 hours. This seems completely unreasonable to me.
Any suggestions? The district is saying they are short on bus drivers and there is nothing they can do. So all you bus experts... chime in PLEASE!!!!!
Thanks!
Jodi

Jodi - I'm certainly no expert, but that IS completely unreasonable. Just tell them that that is absolutely NOT acceptable! If they are short on bus drivers - there's an easy solution - hire some more! No way I would let them get away with that!

Jodi, I am having the same problem....Eric is on the bus each day for 1 hour and 20 minutes. I looked up Ohio laws regarding this and there isn't any cut-off time...it only states that busses going out of district allow the same time frame as regular ed riders. We only live about 5-6 miles from school, but it is "out of our home district", so I guess I'm stuck. Good Luck...and check to see if your state has any guidelines for this.

YIKES seem to me the after school program might be over by the time he gets there Our schools start the after school programs bout an hour at the most after school. Why so much time, did they say?? Can you in any way drive him?? You can be paid for this, if they cannot provide the right transportation, just for your info CC ~

yeah i would check the length of time the child is allowed to be on the bus - that seems to me to be an unreasonable amount of time spent on a bus, especially for one so close... at meghan's old preschool there were kids who spent a very long time on the bus -- but they also lived an hour away... the kids were only allowed to be on the buses for a certain amount of time however. good luck! laurie

Keep after the bus company. Ask if anything can be done to shorten the ride. Ask often.

I am battling a similar issue...I was considering putting it in my son's IEP somehow -- something about how he's unable to sit in a confined space for more than 45 minutes or something like that? I was hoping that might help force them to shorten the ride. I haven't pursued this yet, though, and not sure it would work but...the thought crossed my mind so I wanted to share.

Okay, after researching, there's nothing in any code, state or federal, that has time limits So, what do you do when wording is vague? Amend the IEP! I've decided to transport Ryan myself until I find out what the Principal will offer. One step at a time. At least I finally found a program!! Ryan is excited to go tomorrow (I'm still freaked ) Jodi
