Hi all,
After last years IEP I was so depressed. Eric didn't make much progress and when they did IQ testing (which I will refuse next time), he scored a "25"! His teacher wasn't very encouraging, and I left there feeling quite defeated. Altho I disagreed with alot of their findings and thought Eric was capable of much more than what they observed, I started thinking maybe they were right, and that I was seeing Eric only through my "mommy eyes".
This week I got his Kindergarten teacher's evaluation for next months IEP. What a difference! Now, I'm not trying to brag, but he is doing some amazing stuff. She said he can identify all the letters of the alphabet (upper and lower case), knows numbers to 50, can pick out his name (1st and last) from the other kids names in the class, can pick out the names of his classmates,
knows all his shapes and colors, and is starting to do simple math problems. I was so impressed. I knew in my heart he was capable of learning, but I didn't feel encouraged last year. Now I must tell you Eric is in a contained classroom at a Special Needs school so there is no mainstreaming. In preschool, he was in a unit that had 6 special needs children and 6 "typical" children.
So maybe the "one on one" time is what he needed. His kindy class has 8 special needs children with one "main" teacher and 2 educational aides. We thought long and hard about where to send Eric for kindy, whether it be our home district or keeping him at our special needs school, and decided to keep him where he was. It turned out to be a good move, at least for this year.
His teacher is great, and very caring. Now he still is non-verbal (but trying so much more to talk), his fine motor skills are very, very, limited, and his large motor still needs alot of work. But I feel progress instead of the "defeat" I felt last year.
I'm just grateful and pray it continues for my little guy...
