I've mentioned my cousin on here several times before, she's the peds home care nurse. She was also the one that got pregnant around the same time I did last year but then miscarried (ectopic pregnancy). We were due only a week apart from each other so although she was very happy for us, I know it was a sad reminder for her that we should have been going through our pregnancies together and her baby would be the same age as Jake. Anyway, she found out she was pregnant again just before I delivered Jake. I was so happy - I told her that it was about time because I really, really wanted her to be pregnant again before I actually had him - thinking it would be a little easier on her.
She's about 13 weeks right now and they did the nuchal screening - came back 'a little thicker' than the doctor would have liked to see. She went to the same perinatologist I did but she didn't care for him at all (he really pushes getting amnios and he was a tad more negative about a Ds dx with her than he was with me). Anyway, they decided to the do the blood tests and those have also come back with an indication the baby could have Ds. As of right now they are putting her chances of having a baby with Ds at 1 out of 20 - and actually, those stats are based on a 35 year old woman and she is 38, so the chances may even be a little higher statistically.
She does not want to have an amnio because she doesn't want ANY chance of miscarrying, no matter how slight that chance is. She went through an awful time with her miscarriage - physically it really did a number on her. So, they are proceeding with an extensive ultrasound just to check the baby's heart to see if there are any defects or problems, just to be prepared for when it is born.
I know that other people have had those same types of markers and their baby did not end up having Ds. How common is that though?
No matter what, if any, condition the baby has when born it will be loved just like any other baby. Her and her husband had considered adopting a baby with Ds before when they weren't sure if they could conceive on their own, so having a baby with Ds doesn't bother them at all. They just want to be prepared for any possible physical problems the baby may have at birth.
