Well, Emily is FINALLY back home from camp!!!! It was a lonnnng week for me! We went to the camp last night for their performance. In year's past, they have always done a night of various SINGING performances........some solo, some groups of campers together, etc. One girl did a poem a few years ago, but otherwise it has always been just singing. This year, the theme was "Camp's Got Talent" (like the TV program "America's Got Talent") and it included 4 categories: Dancing, Singing, Acting, and Comedy. In between the different categories, they showed the music videos the campers had worked on all week. As soon as we got the program, I was immediately bummed because Emily was in the ACTING group, rather than where I would have thought she would love to be......in the DANCING group. (I still feel she would have enjoyed that a bit more, but she TOTALLY enjoyed what she did!). When it came time for her category, they did sort of what Jackie referred to as a "Fractured Mother Goose", because they had a narrator (Mother Goose) sitting in a rocking chair...........and a number of Mother Goose characters did a play. Emily played "Puss n Boots". There was Shrek and a Ginger Bread man, with Darth Vader, etc!!! A very odd sort of play, but the actors seemed to be having a blast and they got tons of laughs and applause. The funny part was that Emily played a CAT, and there is nothing she is more afraid of (or dislikes more) than CATS!!!!! I was cracking up hearing her "meowwww". Afterward, I told her "Emily I can't believe you were a CAT" and she laughed so hard and said "I know Mom"!!!!!
At the end of the performance, the counselors were supposed to sing a song TO the campers........but one by one all the campers began to go up on stage with them and sang along with them. Emily wasn't going to have any part of that. She was perfectly happy just watching, but another camper came up to her and said "Come on Emily! Come up there with me!" And she took Emily by the hand and they ran up on stage and had a great time singing with the counselors.
She seemed to have more fun than ever this year............and I know this because she didn't stop talking all the way home!!! (about an hour and a half to get home, and that's a RECORD of conversation for Emily!!) She told me about all the girls in her cabin and who she liked best and who was "annoying". She told me about the food............the best night was when they had a campfire and did hot dogs and hamburgers on a grill and then had S'Mores. She went on and on with the "recipe" for S'Mores and said we needed to make them at home too. She told me about riding in a canoe, swimming (she said one of the counselors threw her in the pool and she seemed to REALLY love that!), doing arts and crafts, reading after "light's out" using her flashlight under the blanket, and having pillow fights in the cabin.
Normally, she brings home a camera, and seeing the photos is the only way I really know what she did at camp. She typically is just glad to be home and will only say that she had a good time. This year, she told me SO much more.......and I love that! Dad is getting her pics developed right now, so I'll be back in a bit to post a few camp pics.
I can't begin to express how COOL camp has been for Emily. She has NEVER had a bad experience at camp, and has learned so much in the years she has gone. I really recommend it!!!! I've come a long long way since the first year Emily went to camp. We dropped her off and about an hour later it began to thunder and lightning. I BEGGED Terry to drive back to the camp so we could "be there" for Emily. For a minute, I thought he really WAS going to go back to the camp...........and when he passed up that exit, I began to cry....and cry....and cried all the way home! I was just SURE that Emily was terrified and didn't know the counselors well enough to trust that they'd take care of her. Wrong! The counselors told me when we picked her up that it turned out to be a great afternoon. They all hung out together in the lodge and sang songs and did "getting to know each other" games and NONE of the kids were worried about the storm. And that was the hardest year for me. After that, I have sent her because I know it's good for her and I'm always eager for her to get home........but I trust that she's having fun now.
I'll post some pics later.
