Thank God that we all survived the last few weeks of school and Jason was able to start camp! I think the end of this school year was the worst we have had, behaviorially from Jason. Weird, because the rest of the school year he was awesome and his aides marvelled at how well he did this year. I think between that end-of-the-year-itis combined with his allergies kicking his butt, he was just not a happy young man.
So, fast-forwarding to camp. It sounds similar to the way CC describes Chris' program that he is in. Academics mixed with a ton of fun stuff. He's done better each year he has attended. That first year we were biting our nails during that first probation week. Last year he did better, but they still only wanted him to go on the day-long field trips if one of us went with him. Being we can't always go, he ended up staying home those days. We agreed with the camp director that we weren't sure he could handle such a long day.
Well, this year, the director was insistent that he go on one of the field trips without us - she felt his behavior had improved so much that she really wanted us to let him give it a try. The camp is split into two classrooms - younger kids vs older kids. This year she put him in with the older kids and he has done great.
The first all-day trip (they don't get back into town until 7 pm) was to Huckleberry Railroad. She said he did great but towards the end of the day he wandered away from the group and she found him by himself crying. OMG you guys, he rarely cries!!! I started crying when I heard what happened. We have no idea why he was upset, the camp director said nothing had happened that she was aware of. So, she offered to buy him a treat and miraculously he perked up .
His field trip this past Monday they went to Binder Park Zoo and she said he did excellent!!! Yeee haaaa. My boy's growing up!!
I'm so happy because now he doesn't have to miss out on things like this. And, we don't have to stress out that he's causing problems or not happy about going. He loves it!
