I recently became a mommy to a baby with DS (she's 3 weeks old today!) I have two other girls - one is 7 and one is 2.5. I'm learning as I go, and have found a lot of interesting information on this board.
I really liked the article in USA Today.
Not sure if any of you are fans of "The Office" or not. I've watched the entire show on my ipod passing the time pumping and breastfeeding the baby. This whole thread reminded me of one of my favorie episode, Gay Witch Hunt. If you haven't seen it, Michael (the self proclaimed "world's best boss") tells one of his workers "he's so gay." His HR guy tells him that that is a totally inappropriate thing to say to anyone, and that Oscar, the man he said was "so gay" actually was a homosexual. In a comment to the documentary crew, he says "I never would have said Oscar was so gay if I had known he actually was gay. That would be like calling a person who was retarded a "retard". You just don't do that."
Obviously, Michael shows his ignorance in so many ways in that statement...like so many in our culture. I thought it was a great way to call out how ignorant people can be...

I agree with you. You just don't say insensitive things such as a person who is a slow learner, a R. It is really an impolite and rude word to say to anyone but to a person who is a slow learner that is definitely insensitve and hurtful. I know this from first hand experience. As an older child that really colored my way of thinking about myself as a person.

What a great article. Jodi, I get a lot of the same thing. "we don't see Lauren or think of Lauren as being retarded"
The other day at work the lady I was working the floor with said the word 40 times in a 12 hour shift. I couldn't stand it. She knew about Lauren. I just told myself I wasn't going to say a thing to her. It was almost like she was doing it on purpose.
I just cringe when I hear people throw that word around so easy. It doesn't seem to bother some people one bit.

Why, Renee, would you not say something to this "lady"? Do you think that she really was doing it on purpose? Does she hate you? Maybe she caught herself after one or two times and then to make you know it was an "innocent" mistake, she repeated it (as if she really didn't know any better); or in trying not to say it, she dwelt upon it and inadvertantly did what she was trying so hard not to do - like when you have to pee and it'll be half an hour before you can go (don't think about it; I do not have to pee; I do not have to pee - oh man, I have got to pee ) Just some crazy rambling Chris, too

It is just one of those pick your battle things. I had a doctor see L a few months ago that actually called her Mongloid. I had to ask my mom if I heard it right. She was an elderly doctor. I just think some people will never change. I don't know what made her keep saying it over and over. I just heard her say it a few times and then I thought I would keep count.
