The thread about the 5 year girl wandering away and being mauled by a dog leaves me with goose bumps. While we were in MN, my Mom had mentioned a GPS, alarm type of bracelet she had heard about on the news in regards to some recent drownings. (Before we had gotten there a young person with special needs wandered and found in a pond, and while we were there another child with special needs was found in a lake while their family was on vacation.) Having a child that wanders, has poor communication skills, and no fear, is SO scarey. Currently our house is JT proofed, but I never let myself put my guard down, because I know sooner or later he'll figure out how to get to the locks way up high on the door...... Does anyone have any experience with the GPS/Alarm/bracelet type deals? I found this one: childlocator.com/Thanks, Dawn

Let me see if this is the same that my new worker offered for Russell. I have some paperwork on it. She said the only thing is kids w/Autism and sensory issues do NOT like wearing the bracelet which would be Russell. I said I would just microchip Russell! LMAO

Where in MN do you live? (We're in the south metro) Angela's new social worker recommended one for her as well, along with a talking alarms for the doors that tell you WHICH door is opening. Ie: Lower Level walkout, Front Entry, Garage Service door" etc.

OMG A!!!
I looked at the one you posted, then looked at some others. I left the link open.....and a few minutes had gone by, when I was scared s*h*i*t*less by this voice saying:
"Lifesaver One to all units, we have a mission. I say again, we have a mission."
ROTFLLL!!!!! My speakers are behind my computer, so this strange voice comes from behind my computer, and I had NO idea what it was until I looked at my links again (after it happened a second time. Scared me half to death!!!

"Having a child that wanders, has poor communication skills, and no fear, is SO scarey" Yes it is VERY Scary Been there, thankfully its gotten tons better and Chris is less of a take off person these days Never used it for Chris as he will have nothing to due with wearing such a thing. There is something I heard a while back that was like a tracking device that was in a sneaker. Not sure if they are out on the market yet though and I do believe they were very expensive BUT for us every time Chris took off he usually went barefoot so that wouldn't have helped us much. CC ~

If the thing is on a bracelet, it could easily be adapted to be a pin to be worn on a baseball cap, a jacket, a shoe, or any item of clothing.

I have the ion kids locator. It locks on the wrist& they can't get it off. The thing I do like about it is that I can not only tell John-John is in the building, but where in the bulding. He got away from me in the church I was at, the locator said he was straight ahead, There was a wall right there. Then someone said he's up here in the balcony. It was right! You can put it on a tag holder and attach it to him, but knowing John-John, it would be off. It recharges in about 2 hours. One problem I do find is that the wrist band is at it's limit & John-John is almost 8. You can't swim with it. Pat

I think that is great Pat! I wonder if we have anything like that here. I mean, there are those type of necklaces for diabetics and those who have asthma. And for those who can't take certain drugs. I'd like to know if we have something like that here.
There is a Pat on a Mosaic Down syndrome website I visit sometimes. I think that is you but I am not sure. I know Pauline visits on that website.

Thanks for all of the info!
I'll have some reading and discussing to do now.
At this point, JT wouldn't tolerate a bracelet, but I do think he would get use to it. Kinda like me getting use to wearing a watch again?!

Leah, I grew up in the Twin Cities, all of our family is still there. We then moved just barely over the border to WI, and most recently we're in Kentucky. We were in MN "home" visiting just recently.
