I just found out about this site from a friend (hi M!) and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Tonya and I am mom to Madalyn and Parker. Madalyn is 5yo and typical in every sense of the word. She is getting ready to start kindergarten next week and is very active, talkative, and can even be sassy at times (well, ok, most times ). Parker is 28 months and the cutest thing I've ever seen (and I'm not just biased here ). Parker has DS, AV Canal repair, g-button fed, a couple hernia repairs, and the list goes on. He is on the verge of walking...he pulls up to everything, cruises around furniture but just won't take that first step. He's getting heavy too so I'm hoping he starts soon! He loves to imitate so signing is a strong point for him. He knows about 30 signs. Feedings have always been our weak area. He ate prior to his heart repair but it was always a slow go. He completely quit eating cold turkey after heart surgery (5mos old). We have made progress but it's been a long haul and we still have a long way to go. Anyway...this is getting long but just wanted to share a bit about us. Can't wait to meet everyone! Tonya

Tonya, Welcome! So glad you found this site...its a wealth of information and support. (and good friends). I'm Dolly, mom to Eric, age 7yrs. He's quite the charmer, but a handful too! I'm a "older" Mom as he was a big "surprise" at the age of 46! But a lovely surprise. He makes me smile every day! Again, welcome, and am looking forward to hearing more about you and your lovely family.

Welcome. I'm Joy and live in Texas. My son, 2 1/2, is also g-tube dependent. He got g-tube in NICU because of aspiration and we have made virtually no progress with oral feeding. FRUSTRATING, to say the least. We are on a waiting list for a feeding program and working on acceptance to an intensive feeding clinic. I've decided I can't do this one at home.
Ibby just started walking this summer but now he never stops and he is just 2 months older than your Parker. It took him a long time to get from standing to walking but when it clicked he was off and running. It's such a joy to see him blossom now that he can really explore his world and so exciting to be able to say "he's walking" - I'm sure you're anxious for this big milestone!
I'm sure you'll enjoy this group.
Joy

Chris, The pic is his easter pics. The rabbits are not ours but they are real. He did really well with them considering he sometimes has problems with textures. I really need to get a more recent photo taken. I think we may do family pics this fall.
Hi Joy. Yes, I know all too well how frustrating the feeding (or lack of) is. Parker is finally bringing foods to his mouth and will sometimes even chew on them! However, he won't swallow. He'll either gag or spit or pick the food out with this fingers. He has had a swallow study and everything was good there. For some reason he just won't swallow...probably because he is out of practice. I keep working with him though...hoping for a miracle.
He has come so far though...at one point he gagged at the sight of anything feeding related (bottle, spoon, etc). He would throw himself backwards and lock his mouth shut at every feeding attempt.
I am considering an intensive feeding program also, although there are none in my area that I am aware of and I'm not sure if leaving town for a long period of time would be good for the rest of my family.
That is definitely reassuring that Ibby is walking. Maybe Parker will get it soon. Parker is very stubborn. He walks while holding our hands and he cruises like a pro but he just won't let go. He drops to his bottom the second he thinks I am going to let go. He usually laughs when he drops so I'm pretty sure he thinks this is a game. BUT...he started pushing a walk behind toy (independently!) tonight for the first time so we are excited!
