I don't post here often but I do read. I needed to share with others who understand. My daughter, Elizabeth, is now 5 months old and weighs in at 9.4 lbs. We met with the surgeon Thursday regarding her VSD and ASD because she has started losing weight and showing other signs and symptoms of impending failure. He scheduled her for open-heart this Thursday. So... we must go down to U of M Tuesday night to be at the hospital Wednesday morning at 0730. (we live approximately 2.5 -3 hours away). Will spend all of Wed. getting work up, then back on Thur for surgery. I thought I was ready for this, but I'm still really nervous. My husband and I are both nurses so you would think we'd be a little more settled. It just seems like such a ..... wrong??..... to cut into such a precious (tiny, tiny) little body. So... if you could keep us in your prayers we would appreciate it. I'm confident she'll do well, but ohhhhhhh can't help the nerves.

Elizabethsmom, (One of my favorite names, Elizabeth). I can understand your apprehension...they are so little and helpless. But it sounds like she will be in capable hands. I will definetly keep your little Elizabeth in my prayers..and you and your hubby too. Please, let us know how she does. God Bless you all.

Sheryl,
I'm so glad you posted up to let us know the surgery date. Elizabeth will be in our thoughts and prayers.
I completely forgot to post here about our CADSA picnic this year and that we got to meet you guys!! Elizabeth is just the sweetest little doll and I can completely understand when you say it just seems so wrong to have her go through that kind of surgery.
Please post up when you can to let us know how things go. You guys will be in our thoughts.

Elizabethsmom, I will be praying for Elizabeth on Thursday, and for her mom and dad too! Please let us know, when you can, how the surgery went. My daughter never had open heart surgery, but did have surgery on her stomach/intestines the day after she was born, so I can relate to your feelings about one so tiny going through surgery. I'm believing that Elizabeth will have a good recovery!

I completely understand your apprehension...Erin had her heart surgery at a mere four months and seven pounds.....like you, I couldn't get the image of them "cutting" her out of my head.....I was sick with the thought....but I tried to let that image go and focus on my duaghter being healthy and putting the surgery behind us. You said you are both nurses....so that will defintiely help.....sometimes the post surgery can be a shock to parents not expecting all the tubes, wires, the scar, etc, etc, I got all my advice here when she did her surgery and I was glad to have it....I brought her mobile from home, her crib blanket, I did take a picture of her before and after surgery so that she could see herself when she was an adult and know what a trooper she was ! Handing over a teeny baby at surgery time was so hard....I'm welling up now remembering how terrible it was....but of course, I am so thrilled to have it behind us and have her declared "perfect" any time someone listens to her heart ! I will be thinking of you on Thursday......PM me if you want !

I'm praying for your family and the staff who will be handling surgery & recovery.
I'm curious for those of you whose kids went through open heart surgery: is the scar less of a scar when they have this surgery early rather than late? I hope this question doesn't offend anyone, I just wonder 'cause babies seem to heal so well...

University of Michigan.
Kind of figured that Sheryl might not have a chance to post up again until after the surgery . . .

Sheryl,
My daughter had heart surgery on her three month birthday. She was very ill with heart failure and was 9 lbs 4 oz. Handing her over to the nurse to take her into the operating room was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my entire life.
Considering how ill she was, Sarah did very well. She was in PICU for 9 days and in a room for one day before she was able to go home.
My guess the scar is going to be similar no matter what age the child has heart surgery. Sarah's is very noticable, it is a thick white line.
I will keep little Elizabeth in my prayers.

I will definately say a prayer for you and your precious Elizabeth(thats my daughters middle name:) I am sure Elizabeth is a trooper and will come out of surgery with flying colors, and have a speedy recovery. I can't even imagine how I would feel if Ayden has to have surgery, he hasn't had his echo yet, so I dont even know if he has problems. I can relate to how you must feel thou, even being a nurse, you are a mother first and it is so hard to see your own child having to go thru this. My mom did it 6 times with my little sister, I remember how hard it was for her. Take care, I will be thinking of you

Hey, I'm a nurse, too, but it is totally different watching your own child go though this! Of course you're nervous! Nicholas also had open heart surgery, and it's very scary, but I can't even describe to you what a relief it will be to have it behind you!!! And you will be amazed at how healthy she will seem afterwards! Nicholas still weighed under 8 lbs at 3 mos old when he had surgery, and I just had this image in my head of him always being this little scrawny thing. So not true! He's a whopping 40 lbs at 4 yrs old and SOOOOOO strong!!!
We'll all be thinking of you and saying prayers!
