I haven't posted in quite a while, however I do check in as often as I can.Just wanted to share yet another positive story for those of you that have your kids fully included.Sarah started her second year of middle school a few weeks ago. The start of a new school years brings with it a host of emotions for students and parents especially when your child has a disability. While Sarah has done well socially, I wait for the day when she isn't included in the (click).Once again my fears were calmed last Friday night at the high school football game. Our middle daughter is a senior and is in the flag corp.Last Friday was senior night when the parents walk across the football field with their senior.Sarah was in the stands sitting with her aide. When we got back to our seat there sat Sarah with an 8th grade football player on sitting on each side. She proceeded to introduce these fellows to me and her father, then they carried on with their conversation. As the night progressed a very large group of middle schoolers sat in front of us and I wondered how Sarah felt as she watched them interact, sitting with friends not parents and if her feelings were hurt.Just about that time one of the boys in the group yelled"Hey Sarah, come sit with us"As she moved down to sit with her friends I watched. I watched as this group of kids included her in their conversations, let her talk on their cell phones, taught her how to text message, shared their popcorn, and even gave her on of the souvenir footballs that was tossed into the crowd by the cheerleaders. It was at that moment that I realized that Sarah is going to be just fine. She has single-handedly formed friendships and worked her way into the hearts of many. So those of you just starting out on this journey known as public school, please know that although the road is sometimes rough you WILL be amazed at what can happen!
Blessings to you all,
Lisa
