Joy has gained five pounds since her physical on August 2.
She isn't eating any more than usual, and I don't see any other unusual signs of illness such as excessive thirst/urination, lethargy, etc. She's as active as usual.
We didn't do her thyroid screening yet because at her physical everything appeared to be fine and we didn't want to poke her unnecessarily. I will definitely take her in this week to have the test done, but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced sudden weight gain with their child.
Joy takes no meds, has no heart problems, and is in good health. Right now she's 41 inches and (as of yesterday) weighs 57 pounds. I have a call in to the pediatrician, but wanted some wise UnoMom (and Dad) advice. I'm worried.

i believe that the dr. will be concerned with a gain/ loss of two or more pounds a wk. with no other symptoms its hard to say thyroid is a factor because of the Ds children go through growth spurts they also eat and times they dont i know there is a growth chart for Ds so have her peds check that and her thyroid see were your at my boys just went in and there was no concern about height/weight but like you the thyroid awaits me they need to go in this week i personally am focused on those results because it is a big part of our kids anywho let me know...

It may be the thyroid Lauren was not diagnoised with hypothyroid until later in life. She was pretty think until she hit her 5th b-day. They boom, she started to add weight. She only takes a small amount of medication but just that little bit of loss made her gain. We just went in yesterday to the endocrinologist and she did grow 2 inches finally. I would have them check it out.

Jennifer, Just a thought...may not be medical at all. Are you weighing her on a different scale, did she have different clothes on, did you make sure the scale was zeroed out? I know I weigh Collin regularly and between the doctors office and home it can fluctuate 3-5 lbs.

I did calibrate the scale after she got on it and it said she was 57 lbs. I had her get off, I calibrated it, and it gave the same result. I realize the doctor's scale may be a bit different than ours, but there was still a four pound gain on our scale from other days. She weighs herself almost every morning when she comes out of the bathroom (she thinks it's fun), so I am able to keep pretty close tabs on her weight. She was naked and had just had a BM, so I think it was a true reflection of her acutal weight. I have a call into her ped, and I have a feeling he will want to see her, as well as do the labs. I'll keep you posted. Good news is that she's feeling fine, she's active, and there are no signs of illness. I guess I need to focus on the positive. Jenifer, mom to Joy Daisy

I would be concerned, too. It seems that our kids have a tendency to become overweight at this age. My daughter just turned six and I think she is a little overweight at 43 inches tall and 46 lbs. We are struggling with trying to feed her healthy foods but her favorites are all high fat (pizza, fries, cheese). She recently discovered her love (a passion) for ice cream. I have switched from regular pasta to whole wheat or multigrain. We love Barilla Plus. I also give her toasted Brownberry Double Fiber Bread instead of fries to go with her ketchup. She loves fruit and I actually got her to eat a few green beans this week (she doesn't like veggies). I told my DH last night that I am only going to buy lowfat cheese from now on. We also buy Breyers half the fat Double Churned Ice Cream for a weekend treat. The problem is that she asks for it any time she walks in the kitchen. It could be that Joy Daisy is just getting ready for a big growth spurt. It seems that kids gain weight first and then get taller. I know that getting blood out of Sarah is very difficult and extremely traumatic. I understand if you want to wait a month or so before you have her thyroid checked. Keep us updated. Chris

Jennifer, I know I'm probably being annoying but I'm trying (because I know I would want it to be) to find something other than medical...because God knows we all have enough of that!!! What about her salt and caffeine intake? I know she's only 5 but I can fluctuate 3-5 lbs in a 1-3 day period if I don't drink enough water or eat to much salt...thats why I have my fat clothes!! Keep us posted.... Connie

My son would gain weight (at his tummy mostly) just before a growth spurt.

It is interesting that you have written this thread! Leah has had the same thing going on. I actually was going to post it! She has gained 15 pounds in just one year!!! My Dr. is shocked. We went to her cardiologist apt. I was expecting to hear everything was fine beacause Leah has always had a great heart. This time, the Dr. said she thinks that the right side of her heart may be enlarged. She thinks that is the reason for the weight gain. I have seen a decrease in her activity level though, so you may have something else going on. Has she had her heart checked recently? We will find out what to do to help her after an ultrasound is done. I wish the Dr.'s were faster at arranging these things! I am a nervous wreck! Good luck with your sweety!

;D HI... Steff here haven't been around for a bit but had to chime in about the weight issue. Olivia started gaining weight about 4-5 years of age. We have had her tested every year for her thyroid but her levels haven't been high enough to put her on meds. She did however test positive for hashimotos(thyroid prob) which in the future will most likely have her on meds. BUT for now... If I were you really try to see what carbs are causing her to gain. For example the dreaded juice boxes etc. They now have juice boxes with no sugar. Get those. Subtle changes in her eating habits will produce great results. Try now before you know of any thyroid disease to change her diet up a bit lowering her carb intake. Get Joy moving more cause the more weight you gain the less you move then it turns into a viscous cycle.Believe me my girl has to be forced to get moving. We do a workout every night before dinner. I have a jumprope.... a pulley which Liv loves and free weights and leg and ankle weights. We all work out for 30 minutes then eat dinner. Her ability to keep on keeping on has increased dramatically since we started to do this 3 months ago. It's great to start on the road to healthy eating now and teach Joy all about good and not so good food choices.Good luck lemme know how it went. (((HUGS))) steff
