Ok, so we get a phone call. Its the doctor. Lauren has sleep apnea. The study that we did manage to show she stops breathing at night. Now we are off to the ENT. She already has no toncils and adenoids. I guess they will try CPAP? Now I am a little happier...this could explain some of the behavior issues. Darn sleep tech. He should never told me that she didn't have anything wrong with her

Hannah started CPAP back in June. I have noticed a HUGE difference in her behaviour and how she feels. CPAP is not a lot of fun at first but it is amazing the difference it makes. If I can share any tips with you let me know. I am happy you have answers.

Renee... when we were at Dr. Capone's Friday conference in KC, he talked about behaviors and sleep apnea quite a bit. Kevin and I could see TONS of light bulbs going off atop parents' heads! LOL And you know, if you need any guidance, Dr. Capone is very approachable by email I am told. A.

Renee, I'm so glad you were able to get answers; even when the sleep study didn't seem to have gone well. I know this isn't the same thing really.........but I remember so many times in my life where I've had a few nights in a row where I got very little sleep (lol like when I had babies) and it really does make you feel lousy the next day. Makes sense that you'd misbehave after so many nights of it! I hope the sleep apnea can be treated and that Lauren has much better days!!

Ethan just had a T&A for sleep apnea, and his index was only 2.7 episodes per hour (I've heard of much worse). I was contacted by a sleep researcher at U of M to ask if we wanted to participate in a study that they were doing about apnea in children. Ethan wasn't eligible to participate because he has DS and is obviously physically pre-disposed to sleep apnea.
However, the researcher and I had a very long conversation about sleep apnea (she has a grown child with special needs) and one of the things we discussed was the link between sleep disturbance and behavioral problems. It is believed that there are many children being medicated for ADHD whose real problem is sleep apnea. In other words, doctors are medicating the symptoms without finding out the underlying cause. There are obviously kids whose ADHD has another cause, and who benefit greatly from medications, but the sleep apnea component is one that should be explored if there are any indications of apnea. Addressing the apnea might make it possible for some kids to forego ADHD meds.

Stevie had more than 80 episodes in the 3 hour study she did before her superglottoplasty. After, she had none, and sats of 98 to 100 all 3 hours.

Does anyone have an email address for Dr. Capone. I would like some tips on getting our kids to wear the CPAP.

I'd think that being a laurasnowbird-type meanie, you could get them to wear the CPAP while they are little. And for kids who're bigger, you'd have to attach a consequence to it's not being worn & make them responsible for it, just like with any other requirement like being ready for school on time.
