samanthas tonsils are to enlarged and also her adeinods are to enlarged and they did the sleep study to see if they need to come out. they thought she might have a breathing problem due to her tonsils and adeniods. sue

Hmmm, makes me a bit nervous. My 3 year old just saw an ENT on Wednesday, he took an x-ray and decided that the tonsils and adnoids should come out....granted the Dr. knew that JT is going to have his tear ducts probed and would be put "under" for that (at the same time, the Dr. wants to clean his ears out really well and check to see if JT should have tubes). He is an open mouth breather and snores some, not a ton. I wonder if we skipped a step?
So what does a sleeping study entail?

Chester, Cassie's pediatrician wanted a sleep study done before having Cassie's T&A removed but the ped at the Ds clinic said it wasn't necessary. She said the tonsils were large enough that they had to be at least part of the problem. She said if Cassie's sleeping/snoring/waking up all night didn't improve after the T&A removal, then she would do the sleep study to find out what else was a problem. She sleeps much better now, never had the sleep study. She also had tubes put in at the same time.

Chester. a sleep study entails an overnight stay in a hospital/sleep study lab. The child is hooked up to leads to measure O2 levels and sleep cycles. In other words.. the kid is REALLY hooked up !! (from head to toe). The Technician then monitors all the necessary stuff from another room.. and a parent must be with the child in the sleep studies we have done. From what I have read the littler kids have had an easier time w/ sleep studies than my Gabe (his first was done at about ll) . He was very VERY restless and in two sleep studies they have not gotten good results (I think the kid has to actually sleep lol) but it was determined that he does have sleep apnea. They are routinely advising sleep studies cause sooooo many kids with DS do have apnea. In many many cases a T & A helps a lot...if you talk to your local hospital or place that does sleep studies they can give you lots more info.

Hi there!
My son Ryan (6 now) was three when we noticed he was having difficulty breathing when he would sleep. I mentioned this to the pediatrician who said that he had to stop breathing for more than 15 seconds to worry. Okay, so about a year later I saw a specialist who immediately ordered a sleep study and two weeks after that ordered a tonsilectomy and adenoidectomy with ear tubes to boot.
Ryan's growth and development was harmed due to the misdiagnosis of his pediatrician... and I let her know too!! He suffered from chronic ear infections that could have also been avoided if the diagnosis was on target. Physically he gained weight (he was in the lower 5th percentile for children with DS at 3) in the first year that put him in the 50th percentile... he's now in the 75th. His speech, although still significantly delayed has improved.
I hope the surgery isn't necessary, but don't worry if it is. It was a wonderful thing for Ryan, and he is so much better off healthwise.
