Joy has been obsessed lately with making toast, which isn't a problem with proper supervision. However, this morning she decided to make a waffle in the toaster while Daddy and I were still upstairs.
She didn't pull the toaster completely out of the appliance garage, and the door came down on the toaster button, forcing the waffle to stay down in the heating element for God only knows how long. When I came downstairs, black smoke was rolling out of the toaster and filling the kitchen. The waffle was burned to a crisp.
But the scariest part (besides the fact that the smoke detector didn't go off) is that my girl was sitting on the floor in the living room reading, oblivious to the smoke filling the house. Aaaahhhhh! I was so frustrated by that ... and by her general lack of self awareness and safety.
Add to that the fact that I slipped on the ice last Thursday and broke my wrist, and you can say it's been a pretty crappy week.
But God is good and things will be fine. Just gotta teach my girl to leave the toaster alone (or hide it from her).
Hugs to all! Jenifer, mom to Joy Daisy

Yikes........sorry about your wrist, and your big scare!!! The only thing I can say is that this had to be a learning experience for Joy, and she'll keep right on learning. We continue to have learning experiences like that now and Emily is 16. Doesn't make it less scary, doesn't make it any less upsetting.............but she really will keep on learning from mistakes. Owweee that wrist must be sore. I hope you are getting lots of help. Emma and Nicki are diabolical with kitchen appliances. I took my eyes off them for a second and next thing I knew our smoke alarm was going off. Turns out they had tried to microwave some popcorn - without taking the plastic wrapping off and the plastic caught fire. Emma was very clever and tried to put the fire out with sugar. I think she thought it was flour which would have been better. Consequently we had to replace the microwave but fortunately no one was hurt. Hope that wrist heals fast Cheers Carolyn

Jenifer, I'm right here in Iowa with you, southern part! I can see how you fell, I'm just surprised I haven't done the same yet! We have huge branches down all over our area, power lines down, we were without power for 24 hrs. I'm ready for summer! Hope the wrist is feeling better. As for the toaster...Man, isn't that lack of awareness frustrating and scary?!? Doing something like that and learning from it is one thing, but seeming like they don't even realize there IS something to learn from it is entirely different!

It took me a while to learn the obvious stove top skill. I had problems with the pictures and which turner was the appropiate one to turn on. I can now say I am doing this successfully. We have a new oven and I am still learning which to turn on while cooking something. I just don't do it very often so I sometimes forget the steps Mom always tells me. Of course she gives me more than two things to remember and I don't do that well! I have to write these type of things down for me to do it on my own.
Jenifer, I hope your wrist will heal soon.
