Hi to all,
I think I may have posted a couple years ago but the 3 times I did have disappeared! lol along w/ me!
I'm the proud mom of a five year old son Jelani. He has ds and he's the light of my life. I must say he's been growing so fast lately! (still just 30lbs / 37 inches though) Jelani is inkindergarten with 9 other children (4 w/ ds) and 3 aids and has PT/OT/ST and APE. This is my first time being a parent let alone understanding special needs so I'm learning right along side Jelani. I'm thankful to have message boards and books to gain knowledge. I never attended any support groups, so coming online was how I stayed informed. Early Intervention was great because inhome visits made it easier, but the school system, IEP's, etc.. can be intimidating at best, but after the past couple years you adapt, so has Jelani
His speech is my biggest concern and also his walking. He started walking unassisted at 4.5 yrs old and still holds his arms out w/ wide gait. But all in all he's come a long way from being just 1 pound 6 oz at birth! People say it's because of his mommy and I say it's more his doing and God's.
Life for me is a bit of a challenge because I'm a single parent,
but I honestly wouldn't trade my life with Jelani for anything, he's
a joy beyond words, but there's always those "days"!
I wonder about how many little ones here have alopecia??
Jelani has this and he's lost alot of hair in the front. His derm put him on a topical steriod for the past two months and it's starting to grow back very fine. Any advice from experience with this???
Oh and how about potty training your kiddos? How's that coming along??? Jelani has much interest and I try to take him consistently when he's home from school...the aids take the kids twice in during the 4 hour class. But Jelani still pops up to stand to do his business, lol. (like a Jack-in the box!) But it's all about consistency I think. Any secrets for success you want to share???
Well I have lot of reading to do here at the board. Thankyou for reading my intro/update in a nutshell! I need to spend time reading here at Unomas and find where to post pics.
I see that momofrussell is moderator. How are you! Long time no see!!
