He's a Jack-Russell terrier named Gus. This afternoon I went out to get the mail and he squeezed through the door and took off. I took his collar off him after we walked this morning so it could dry ... we got a foot of snow yesterday. So he's out there with no ID tags and he's been gone for almost four hours. I've called the police station, the humane society and several neighbors. I don't know what we'll do if he doesn't turn up. He's Joy's sleeping buddy and she loves him so very much.

I am so sorry. I would call the humane society again tomorrow. Hopefully he will just show up. I will say some prayers. As for the sleeping buddy....maybe she could use a "surrogate" for the night...like a favorite toy....or even mom.

Awww. Poor Joy. Does your Humane Society give out info on found dogs over the phone? Ours makes you go in. I once lost a cat & went in twice a week to look for him. After 5 weeks, he showed up there. Someone had "adopted" him until he could escape for someone else to turn him in. I was very glad to find him.
Praying that Gus will find his way home!

Well . . . any news on Gus yet? We know how you feel, we've "lost" Toby twice (aka, Jason's sleeeping buddy) and it's AWFUL. Thank God both times he has been found by people that took good care of him overnight and turned him in the next morning.
Let us know if you found him!!

Oh no! I would be a wreck! Please tell me he's microchipped AND that you registered the chip. (did you know approximately 20% of people who microchip their pets don't register the chip so there is no information should the pet become lost.)
Most animal control officers, vets, and shelters have microchip scanners. The first thing they do when a new animal comes in is scan it's entire body for a chip. (chips can migrate.)
I'll be praying you get your buddy back!
