I'm often concerned about alot of Jelani's various sensory response...while he doesn't have tactile defensiveness I see him do a startle response to such things as loud car engines, static on the t.v, moving fans, and other things...along with contant teeth grinding, and I'm wondering if you can shed some light, has your little one had a neurodevelopmental assessment? And is this something only a neurologist will do or can it be done as an assessment by another developmental specialist? nacd.org/more_information/testimonials/neurologically_impaired.htmlI found this link (hate the way they use 'downs' as disability first) but I apreciated the info they provide. Any suggestions or experience you can share?

I see you are in LA. You should contact the Down Syndrome Clinic: Developmental Disabilities Clinic UCLA Hospital Neuropsychiatric Institute 740 Westwood Plaza Los Angeles, CA Phone: 310-794-9516
We went to a developmental pedi. and I didn't really like him too much. He wanted to put Lauren on medication right away and I didn't agree with him. The clinic was amazing because they all study DS issues.

Yes, a neuro developmental eval would be helpful. And, if it turns out that he has sensory perception issues, an OT could be very valuable. When Emily was much younger, she had some sensory issues and our OT had sensory integration training......she helped a lot!!

you know his ped now isn't at all helpful...so here I go again, the last ped he had just stopped taking our insurance! And I'm not sure which developmental ped I can find, I need to get some good references from some parents on a good doc. Jelani has a neurologist from years ago at Cedar Sinai..I'll see if he still takes our insurance and if so we can go there...I know he needs a neuro assesmnt, it's quite obvious to me. I'll be calling ucla tomorrow and cedars...and thanks Susan, his old OT had SI...I'm going to check if his OT at school does.
Renee, I really appreciate that you listed the Ucla number for me...thanks! Back to the insurance once again...(ugh)...keeping my fingers crossed that this clinic takes it...Jelani has a his audiologist and Ent at Ucla so I hope we can go there for neurology too.

hey girlie sorry been sick as a dog these days... hey definately go to ucla and check out therapy west. They are all sensory-integration based and that sounds like just what jelani could use. Liv started at 5 months with all her therapies being sensory-intergration based and it took a while to get her out of it but man she did and u will love it when his senses get far far less defensive and he can njoy the world on its terms. we are loud here in l.a. lol so hey give em a call they are fabulous.
