I finished this book in 2 days and had to force myself to put it down to go to sleep. Its about a family whose 3rd child was conceived to be a perfect donor for her sister, who had leukemia. The author is Jodi Picoult.
I usually read only scifi and fantasy but this book was amazing.

Yosh's Mom,
You read scifi books? I was wondering about those kind of books. If I was to read one what would you recemmend? Also, do you read any of them where the woman is the major character? Do you read any of Terry Brooks books?

I ditto you on the fact that the book was amazing... she is an incredibly gifted writer. I was very disappointed in the end, though. I thought it was really an awful ending to a brilliant book. I won't go into details, in case someone out there is going to read it, but I was very disappointed. Have you read, "The Plain Truth", by the same author? She throws a twist into that ending as well...

Debbie: There are a lot of sci fi books with women as the main character. If you are looking for stories about the future I would try Friday by Robert Heinlein or anything by Elizabeth Moon. If you like stories about fantasy worlds with wizards and magic, try reading books by Mercedes Lackey or Marion Zimmer Bradely. But Robert Heinlein is my absolute favorite author. I do read Terry Brooks, but only his lighter stuff like Magic Kingdom For Sale/Sold.
Kristin: Yes, I was disappointed in the ending. I had been ready to accept one turnout and the other was a real shock.

I also like Jodi Picoult's books. I'm a high school media specialist (librarian) and a lot of my high school students like them too. I'm currently reading another one of her books called "The Pact." I haven't finished it yet, but it's pretty good so far.
As for scifi, have you read "Double Helix?" It's a YA (Young Adult) book, so it's a fairly easy read. It's interesting stuff, however, and I enjoyed reading it. There was an unexpected comment from a young man with Down Syndrome near the end of the book that gave me pause to think, too (he wasn't involved in any other part of the book; he just gave a short comment near the end). I even gave this book to one of our biology teachers to read . . . thinking that she might be able to use it to generate some discussion in her high school classes.

Thanks for the suggestion !!

I have been reading John Jakes books. I finished one of his latest books, I think, On Secret Service. It was really good! I like historical novels.
Right now I am trying to read Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Adolescent. It is interesting and kind of different than Crime and Punishment which I really liked. I always am reading several books than just one. It is fun that way! John Jakes books are entertaining. I have started reading Heaven and Hell which is one of the North and South books. It is after the Civil War ended. It may be the last one of the series. I am not sure.
You sure got me interested in Jodi Picoult's books. I may have to look her up on the Internet.

Well, I did finish The Perfect Match by Jodi Picoult....it was a very good book for anyone interested....I'm not sure I agreed with all that happened in it and like Sister's Keeper it is about ethcis and emotions....really makes you think ! I just bought Sisters Keeper at Target last night.....it is one of their bookclub books.....It is very good so far....I'm already starting to questiobn myself and the attentiion I give to all my kids (or lack of in my oldest sons case). I would say jodi is a great writer.....she tends toward legal writing ( like John Grisham) but very emotianal and family situated as well.... Thanks again for bringing this write to my attention !!

I just finished it...I could NOT put it down....thankfully I was at the beach....so lots of time to read.
I agree with Kristin...it was an awful ending....not just because I was sad by it.....but it seemed like the author just gave up and wanted to end it quickly and easily. I think she took the "easy way out" in this ending. I do enjoy her as an author and I am postive I will read all her other books as well......I'd love to see anyone's opinions on any of the other books....... By the end of the story I couldn't decide if I liked Sarah or not.....I do sympathize with her....but I'm not sure I liked her. I HATED the part when they talked about Anna's birth and all she was concerned with was making sure the cord was intact and taken care.....Anna was absolutely second there. And to never even ask EITHER daughter what they wanted to do.....REALLY ask and really LISTEN.....I didn't like that. But who knows how I would handle the horrible situation she was trying to handle. A little late in responding, but got the book from a friend for my b-day in August and my husband scarfed it up and tore through it in 2 days. I read it just as quickly and we both found it to be a very well-written, interesting, but sad book. What an ending, huh??? I didn't see it coming. That's a good author for you!
I've reserved "Vanishing Acts" at the local library and can't wait to get my hands on it. I also recommended it to the book discussion group at the library that I've just joined. Can't wait to see what they think. I wasn't sure if I liked Sara or not, either. I thought for sure that Jessie was going to burn down the house or something and accidentally kill both girls.
Has anyone ever read any Joy Fielding (See Jane Run, etc.). She's a great author and you just can't put down her books!

Ok, I just finished reading this - yup, in 2 days, just like everyone else! It's a hard one to put down.
Now that I've wiped the tears away . . . I'm not sure how I feel about the book. I'm so torn up right now!! LOL I just can't believe how it ended.
I'm going to have to wait a few hours before I pick up another book - I've got to let the dust settle in my mind after this one.
