I don't remember the last time I was bragging...so now's the time! Jelani's slow progress in communication has always been one of my biggest concerns. He speaks still in that 1-2 word stage and very limited, maybe using 4-5 words consistently. We all know receptive language is more advanced in our kids... but now more than ever I hear him naming things, again one word at a time like..."makeup", or "coke" or "belt" as he points! I'm so proud and I pick him up (straining my back!) and we sing and dance a little celebration of his new word(s).... Ok NOW here's my BRAG finally, lolol..... BRAG #1
I was sitting at my computer yesterday morning before he was awake, then before I even turned around there he was next to me and he put his hand on my arm and said "NO more mommy!!!! (in his softest voice!) I was speachless...I logged off and said OK Jelani, no more computer... ;D
BRAG#2
There I was again at my computer but this time in the evening...Jelani must have been over anxious to eat and couldn't wait for dinner to finish in the oven. He walks over to where I was sitting and had taken a small saucepan from the cupboard... he stands holding it out and said "Look at me!!!!" I was so proud I said "Ok Jelani, I'll look at you sweetheart!" And we did another dance around the house with a saucepan celebrating his 3 words in a row!" ;D

Very cool. Maybe worth a little risk to your back. But putting 3 words together reminds me of one of favorite stories from Gail Williamson. Do you know Gail? I think Steffi does. Well, very poor netiquette to lift an old post without o.p.'s knowledge or permission. So, somebody can get in touch with Gail and tell on me. And if you do, say hi for me too. << I have another "Blair Lite" to share now that we are discussing 4 letter words.
At speech therapy we had been waiting for more than two words to be put together. Blair was 4 years old and so ready, but it just was not happening. Then one evening, after Blair went to bed, his Dad did the grocery shopping and re-stocked the refrigerator. The next morning Blair and Dad were in the kitchen, I was still lying in bed. Blair opened the frig door and loudly announced "Holy S.h.i.t., Yogurt!" My husband Tommie got down at Blair's level and calmly asked where he had heard those words, and found out he had been watching the film "Space Balls" with his older brother Tim the day before. So Tommie told Blair that some words were not for gentlemen to say and in our house "s.h.i.t." was one of them. Blair took his yogurt and went on his way. Tommie came into the bedroom where I was with a pillow over my face laughing hysterically and did a touch-down football dance that would have given his team a penalty all the while singing "he said three words, he said ... " >> [had to do a little editing to prevent ProBoards software from completely ruining that story] -- Bob

Funny you should mention ettiqitte..I blew that already posting Arrielle's List requesting an Aid... but I hope she never finds out! Don't anyone say anything! Gail Williamson, I met her last year and before that I had emailed her at my witts end asking about teeth grinding and how to make it STOP!!...well she emailed me back and told me that her son Blair still to this day grinds his teeth, and she'll brush his cheek to remind him when in public (hmm, I wonder if that's ok to post here w/o permission??) Anyway here's more... I was also frantic about my son being almost 4 and NOT walking. She shared her story, similar to mine about her son walking late and the pain of carrying him...and she has fibromyalgia. *No one say anything* I've already broken a unspoken code of silence...breech of privacy. But I share this w/you to show how cool she is to share w/ me and I inturn share w/ you Shhhh~ I'll see her again this weekend at the Ds Conference in Pasadena. and I'll tell her you said hi I love your daughter's neat 3 words! omg! Proud I'm sure nonetheless. Did she catch you laughing in the pillow? Jelani's caught me hiding a grin and then slaps my arm and giggles like saying I see you mom!!! I've had to run out of the room laughing myself when Jelani uses choice words...but it's not been lately, and won't again in this house!!! he once said Shufuhup...a thing teenagers in our old complex said to eachother. Glad we've since moved! D~

Gails awesome I heard that story too. Oh Bob how do you know Gail? She's the bestest. Jelani u should be soo proud of yourself. And D I know u are extremely encouraging to him and this is exactly what he needs. ya know what? I remember when Olivia was putting 3 words together we had this big fake bird on a wire like thing that would record and repeat everything she said. It was so hysterical and gr8. She named him Herman. I will show u a pic of her n herman it really encouraged her to speak mor e as he repeated everything she said in her voice.like a recording of herself. lol to the tooth grinding. I was at Olivias gymnastics afterschool program and her n 2 other boys with ds were sitting there. Olivia 10 one boy 14 and another 23 years of age. This was Olivias first experience with ppl with ds consistently. Well her first day I pick her up and all 3 are sitting there together all snuggly and all were doing a massive grinding their teeth session. I had to laugh at the 3 of em sitting happily grinding their teeth like mad.
