Today has just been the bestest in a long, long while!!!!
Alison had me laughing so hard earlier, my sides are still aching ( well some of that might be the result of the belly dancing class I just got home from but I'll save that gem of story for another time!!!). Our usual routine after school is to just kind of kick-back relax for about 45 minutes til Sarah gets home and then have a snack. Weel, for whatever reason waiting was not going to fly with Alison! After asking for a snack for about the 8.5 billionth time in 15 minutes, she stomped her foot, said "Fine, I do myself" and walked into the kitchen. Soon I hear her pulling every pan and pot out of the cabinet til she finds the "right" one. So now she has the pot, goes to one of the drawers and picks out a really nice, big, long wooden spoon. Next she puts the pan up on the stove and then goes over to another cabinet and starts looking at all the cans of stuff in there. ( through all of this she is muttering away - sounds like a very ticked off version of the teacher on all those Charlie Brown shows ) until I hear "Yup, this a good one" Now, mind you I am just about ready to burst cuz I'm trying not to let her hear or see me, I wanna know where this is going!!! Okay, she's got the "good one", takes it over to the stove, manages to get it up into the pan, and begins stirring the can in the pan with the wooden spoon!!!! She got one hand on her hip, her foot is tapping away ( she was REALLY muttering away this point!!! ) and every so often she'd reach up and stir again. Eventually, I just lost it! Alison have me the meanest, nastiest look, harumphed, and looked away, stirred the can/pot and turns and looks back me and asks "How long this take?" I completely lost it then, tears running down my cheeks, the whole works.
And what's funniest is that when I took the can out of the pan - she had chosen LIMA BEANS!!!! Alison has been on a green food strike for months!!! And she actually did eat the whole can of them as her snack!!!
Talk about being independent and what about all the planning she had to do to "cook" her snack!!!
And another note, we had her CPSE meeting to discuss summer services and placement for September and kindergarten. She'll be getting some additional ST and PT sessions which surprised me because it was the CPSE chairperson who suggested the increase in those two areas! And the CPSE recommendation for her kindy placement is in an integrated class in our neighborhood school!!!! ;D ;D ;D Guys, I am sooooooo very happy with this - I have dreamed of this for her since before she was even born but still told myself that my dream may not be her reality and was totally prepared to do what was right for Alison!!! Our school district has traditionally concentrated all of their SpEd classes and resources at one of two schools ( our school is not one of them) so it bothered me to think that Alison would probably not be in classes with her friends in the neighborhood. And for those of you might remember the incident that Sarah had at school when Alison was still just a baby....... that teacher was "invited to retire"!!!! And since then, every year there is this play/puppet show program for grades K-2 about accepting and understanding kids w/disabilities!!! The climate and culture in that building has definitely changed over the last 5 years!!!!
Hope I haven't been too long winded but I just had to share the Alison funny and the Alison accomplishments!!!
Barb
BTW.... sorry I forgot to mention that at no time did Alison try to light the burner under her can of lima beans!!!!! Guess the 157 trillion times of telling her "Do not touch, not for Alison" made an impression!!!!
