Adventures in Mainstream by greg Palmer
This book is somewhat similar to "Retarded isn't Stupid, Mom", yet with differences. The hero of this book has DS, and is quite high functioning. The relationship between child and parent seems to have less friction than with "R isn't Stupid". Mr Palmer gives us a glimpse into his life and the life of his son (Ned)(who has DS) , during a 2 year period at the end of high school and the start of adult life. Ned is a very articulate young man, versed in the arts and liturature somewhat. He writes songs and plays piano. The book touches on many issues- - society's view of mentally retarded adults (I loved his evaluation of SNOW WHITE!!!) -socialization opportunities for adults with DS - work for adults with DS - adults with DS wanting independence and room to breathe and MUCH more! An encouraging book, and worth reading for any parent. (READ to your child, he suggests...) A MUST IF YOUR CHILD IS ALREADY A TEEN
Even if your child is NOT on the level of Ned, the points made are very applicable to children of lesser abilities.
