Yes, it was a very good movie. First, I didn't realize what an addict he was - and also the double life he lead as far as his wife and on-the-road wives! Second, the scene when he is little and trips over the chair is soooo heartwrenching!!!
Good flick.

Jessie, I would not judge Ray Charles for anything what he did in his personal life. He was the talented and brilliant person who brought a lot into the musical world and into American culture. I would put him on the same scale with Mozart. (Mozart is my favorite composer and musician.) Ray Charles is the "Mozart" of his century and his country. God bless his heart and his memory!

Alice: If it sounded like I was judging Ray Charles' character - I wasn't. I was just commenting that I was surprised that those things were such a big part of his life - mostly because he was such a brilliant artist that overcame alot of adversity in his life.

Dear Jessie, I know, I know that you are not that type of person to judge some one, I just wanted to be an advocate for him. LOL It really bothered me then my son came from school when he was in 5th graid and said that Mozart died from alcoholism. That what his teacher said~. OMG! How come she made that statement!? Who will remember that teacher in 400 years or even less? Probably no one! But people such Mozart, Ray Charles, Beethoven, and other great/brilliant classics will be known for centuries! I am going to buy DVD and lots of CD of Ray Charles, because I want to get to know his talent better and injoy his wonderful creations. Thanks, Alice

Alice - Wha??? Mozart died of alcoholism?! I don't remember every learning that in school, wonder why the teacher felt the need to say that?
Anyway, the thing with Ray Charles is that to me it was so surprising to find out about that stuff - amazing the things he did accomplish in his life while battling other stuff. I guess I was ok not knowing all that about him too, and it doesn't change my opinion of him. ;D

I hate to disagree--- I would not say that they are not talented. But if someone is doing something immoral, or something that hurts others, it is a sad thing, and the responsibility for that behavior stays with them. Maybe he had a lot to overcome. And maybe he was a great musician. But knowing about his character is still, in my eyes, a blemish. Maybe in the end he overcame all this- I don't know. His music is great, but I have trouble praising a person if he hurt others. (Maybe he made up for it later???)

I just saw Ray and I do agree it is a great movie.
I think one thing Jamie Foxx did in his masterful performance was play a man who was blind and talented.. but his disability and his genius did NOT make him a saint. I DO think lots of times people without an obvious disability think that OH, so and so is blind or whatever therefore they have some sort of special closeness to heaven just because of that. I think Foxx's performance was VERY authentic in showing that Ray Charles had many failings as a human being but he also struggled with his flaws & demons to become a better man, just as we all have to do. Also the soundtrack is excellent lol.
