I'm having a garage sale, (yard sale, thrift sale whatever you may call it) this Friday and Saturday. This is the first (and quite possibly the last) one I've ever had.
It's been a ton of work and for some reason I'm nervous about it.
We put in ad in the paper, and will put signs up pointing to the house, anything else I should know?

Make really huge signs! Don't put too much information on the signs. I like it to simply read....garage sale --->

I'm procrastinating now. I am so TIRED of going through things!
Big signs, I'll get on that....good point.
How about cash....what's a ball park amount of cash/change that you like to have on hand?
How about early sales, do you let people buy before the sale officially starts? I've had people call me wanting me to pull out all of my 2T boys clothes....I feel funny about that because of the ad in the paper.

Hey Chester the cat... We are having a garage sale too this weekend! We don't usually do garage sales much because I toss and give away quicker then I can save and sell (no room to do that). We had only one last year and one a couple weeks ago. The reason we are doing one again this weekend is because we had it over Memorial Weekend.. and NO ONE had a sale except us.. and most were on vacation. So, this sat is our other one. Plus, we still need some cash for Louisville. We are only allowed 3 signs in our area per the city. So I make mine as big as I can. We didn't advertise, that would have been WAY too productive! LOL... good for you that you did. And although it hasn't happened here, it has happned back in CA that they come WAY before the time you post on the sign..I try to make them wait.. because it IS annoying to try to put your stuff out and they THINK that 6:45 means 7am... it's rude if you ask me and they should wait. As far as the boys clothes... that is up to you...I'd probably feel uncomfy but the flip side is a sale is a sale! Maybe pull out some? And the cash on hand.. I usually try to have around $30 or so in small bills to make cash... 5's.. 1's... ect... and then a few bucks in change.... and they STILL will try to hand you a $20 for a $3 sale and you will have to run to the store for change... LOL... that is what happened to me this past one Good luck girl!!!!! Have fun! Will it be HOT where you are? It will for us. A.

Good luck on the sale! I think you've got all the tips here you should need - well, there is always that issue of people trying to get you to take a lower price for something. Just make sure to be prepared in your mind with a response for items that you absolutely do not want to sell for any less - don't give in to the pressure! LOL
Plastic bags from the grocery store are good to have on hand for people that buy quite a few items too.
And, yes, A. is right, if you advertised it to start at 8:00, they will start coming by 7:30/7:45. I just usually keep my garage door shut until 8:00 . . . mostly due to the fact that I'm still tagging stuff at 7:55!!

The first day of the first garage sale is officially over. The people watching is AWESOME....and sometimes a tad bit sad. It was interesting watching how people responded to /interacted with JT I sometimes forget that people who don't know JT don' instantly love him and they need to build a relationship.
I've learned a lot....make sure to write your ad to appeal to all segements....I missed the baby people and the senior citizens.
Made about $600 today. That is a TON of .50ish shirts and shorts! Tomorrow is half price day....it's just gotta go!
Oh, I caught two people stealing! I didn't say a word, I figured if they gotta steal a .24 ornament they've got bigger problems than I can help them wih.

WOW Chester.. you did good girl!!!! We sold more clothes then anything today... 50 cents too! heehee! In hind sight, the one a few weeks ago we thought wasn't good was WAY better then todays we had. We did over $200 that time.. today... tons of people had garage sales in the area but it was pretty dead. And most were only buying one item for .25 cents.. so we didn't get far... but that is ok. It's towards are Louisville trip. We did just a bit over $70 and that is better then nothing I think!
Glad you had a good sale!!!!!
