Anyone read any of the books by Torey Hayden, they are addictive and when I start one I can't put it down until I have finished it . She is an educational psychologist and special education teacher, she is an American but now lives in North Wales - not far from where we live. She tells the fantastic and often very upsetting stories of some of the children she has worked with since 1979, some of them have learning disabilities, some have been severely abused and some are very mentally disturbed. Hi, they are non fiction but I know she has also written fiction for children. They are emotional and upsetting too but as I said before I couldn't put them down once I had started. I have no suggestion which one to read first as they are all so good. Pauline

Pauline,
I think I must have read one of her books but it was a very long time ago. When I read her name just now I thought, that name sounds familar. We used to receive those Reader Digest Condense books with several books in it. I think one of them was something she had written. I am thinking it was her first book. Did she write about just becoming a teacher with students that seemed hopeless to teach? She wrote how she was able to help the students and how they progressed. I was very impressed with her. She was so caring and she never gave up on them.
Torey Hayden lives in Wales? Wow, I have seen some pictures and it is really beautiful there. I am wondering if the first book she wrote was when she taught in New York. Am I wrong?

Hi Debbie. I am not sure where she was when she wrote her first book but I am sure it was in the US. I don't know how long she has been living in Wales either, I think she married a Welshman. You are right, there are some beautiful places in Wales, its very green and hilly. We live just a few miles from the Welsh boarder and ofter go the the Welsh coast which is only 60 miles from our home. Pauline

At first I liked these books and was amazed, but after a while it seemed a little much. How could one teacher get so many "impossible" cases and come up with so many cures? I think these books have to be fiction. I've been in special ed for almost 20 years and much as I'd like to believe otherwise, kids who have been that badly hurt don't have miraculous recoveries. It takes years of hard work, loving environments and lots of therapy to get over that kind of trauma, if its even possible. Torey Hayden is a brilliant author, to pull people in like that, but no way all those stories are true.

I have every one of her books, and love every one of them. But I have to agree with Kerri....Although they do say they are fiction based on actual students. Having been in the special education system for almost 20 years myself, these miracles don't just happen. They still make for good reading though!
