Dad returned to the nursing home on Thursday. He recovered from his chest infection but he hasn't recovered his swallow (and it is unlikely that he will) so they put a "peg" in his abdomen for feeding. His amputation wound is healing well. But he has absolutely no quality of life - he can do nothing for himself, is lying in bed being tube fed - to be honest I didn't want the peg in but couldn't go against everyone else's wishes. He is talking a bit but is really very depressed - he asked for bread and butter and some porridge and it just breaks my heart that we can't fulfil such a simple request and that he has absolutely nothing to look forward to.
Sorry for being a moan.

Oh Stella.....not the news we were hoping to hear about your dad! I'm so sorry he is having to go through this, and that you are having to watch him in this shape. We have had a number of people in the nursing home who (after even a year or two on peg tube feedings) have slowly but surely regained their safe swallow and started eating again. It's possible!! He's in my thoughts and prayers.

Stella {{{{{{hugs}}}}}} I am so sorry that your dad is going thru all of this and that you have to stand by and feel so helpless! I remember your dad, you & your family in my prayers every night...and hope that he and all of you find some peace with all of this. Will a speech or feeding therapist be working w/ your dad to try and help him regain his swallow? I know it's iffy, but they're usually available to work w/ the patients. take care...laurie

Stella, I am so sorry to hear that, it must break your heart, especially when he asks for his favorites to eat.... You are most certainly not a moan, though you'd have a right to be, if you felt like it and no one would think twice about it ! (((huggs))) -Allisa

Thanks guys, it helps so mudh to share it with you and to know that so many people are thinking of and praying for my Dad.
He is continuing to aspirate on his saliva and has to be suctioned regularly. We don't think he is really aware that his leg is gone as he keeps saying "I think my leg is broken", "there's something wrong with my leg" or "when are they going to operate on my leg" - it is so hard to have to tell him again all that has happened and to see him looking bewildered and struggling to comprehend. I know that his brain doesn't yet realise there is a limb missing - common in amputees - phantom limb etc.
