I was in Target with Patrick today and I noticed where his hair looked thinner so I took a closer look and he has a bald spot that I know wasn't there before. I looked up alopecia and it says that there can also be ridging on the nails which Patrick also has. Has anyone here dealt with alopecia and if you have, have you found anything that helps. Thanks for any info.

Mary, I just IM'd you but will post here too. But IM me when you get a chance, k? I know that some kids/adults w/DS are prone to it.
IN my Woodbine book on Medical topics in regards to DS it does talk about Alopecia. They talk about Alopecia Areta which is an Autoimmune disorder called A.A. for short. This is some of what it says...
"AA is a specific type of hair loss characterized by the sudden appearance of well-defined bald spots on a normal-appearing scalp. Pitting in the nails may also appear in some children. AA is diagnosed by a physical exam and confirmed by a scalp biopsy if there is any doubt. "
I actually condensed it down to that for you. It actually goes into more unusual symptoms and treatments for it.
It says for treatments that some don't need to be treated at all, that the hair will grow back within a year. Others need treatment. It says the ideal treatment should be effective, easy to apply, painless, free of side effects and inexpensive. LOLOL.. don't we want that with ALL treatments for our children LMAO! Steriods are also an option if needed.
IM me if you want...
I'd go to the Ped just to be sure you aren't seeing things LOL.
A.

my daughter samantha jo has alopeica! we did the creams from the doctors and it opened a few pores in her sclap and then it just shut back up again. we stopped taking her to the doctor for it. they say she is too young for shots and they felt it would not do anything for her. everyone is diffrent with alopeica . keep trying and make sure you check your child with a good doctor. my little girl does have a very small patch ( very small amount) growing . the creams they gave us did not really help. she knows she is almost bald and it does not phase her at all. i hope you get answers. sue
