The actual title is Gifts: Mothers Reflect on how Children with Down Syndrome Enrich Their Lives. This is a book of short essays written by Moms of our kids. It is a wonderful collection of experiences, and the moms talk about the entire experience, both the good and the bad. I have read most of the 63 essays, hope to finish soon. Our local group is talking about buying copies to give to new parents, and our few newest parents in our group have read this and said it would be a good idea. And as a side note, in the latest Down Syndrome News, after the review of this book, there is an Editor's Notes as follows: The NDSC distributed free copies of Gifts at this month's American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Convention, thanks to a generous donation from NDSC members Rick and Sandra McElwee and Gerard and Marie McCrea.Pretty awesome!!!! I haven't actually seen, held a copy of this yet. Would like to look it over. It's featured on the NDSC web page and B&N will begin promoting it in the next few days. Just saw a post on the List the the ABC TV station in Philadelphia, channel 6 I think, is supposed to do a story about this book today, Friday, June 1. Report is that story will be shown on evening news, maybe at end of 5 o'clock or 6 o'clock news. Then shown again at 11 o'clock news tonight and 7 am news tomorrow, Sat., morning. Hope to catch one of those. I think they talk to 6 of the 63 contributors. -- Bob

I read two other books that are also like short stories , they are very emotional and very good since they are by parents of children with special needs. "From the Heart(on being the mother of a child with special needs)" by Jayne D.B.Marsh and "You will dream new dreams" by Stanley D.Klein Ph. D. and Kim Schive

I just picked up a copy of this last week at Barnes & Noble. Made such a fool of myself.... standing in the aisle bawling as I read a couple of the stories....... How could I NOT buy it after leaving tear-stains on several pages!!! LOL
The stories I have read have brought tears, laughs, you name it. It is definitely a nice addition to my little library!

I read the whole thing with a 2 week old baby with DS sitting on my lap...I cried a lot, wallowed in my feelings quite a bit, but really felt encouraged overall by the experiences of the women in the book!

We are buying copies of this book to give to the new parents in our area, as part of our new parents packet. We gave a copy to a new mom recently, and then asked her opinion. With tears, and smiles, she said it is wonderful for new parents.

Janis Gonzales who used to post with us here told me she has a story in the book. I plan to buy it if they have it at the conference.

OK so I just actually realised this was a very old post and was bumped up because of what looks like "spam". Bust I think I just answered my own question when I looked up the book. There is alsoa Gifts 2 which looks appropriate for a teachers gift. Mary Grace
