as you all know, MM is starting kindy next week...can anyone suggest any books that might be appropriate for me to purchase for MMs teacher/school/classroom, such as the teaching the child w/ DS to read, etc? i don't want to overwhelm the teacher but I am trying to show her that I am prepared to make those extra steps should she need me. Also, are there any books on modifying cirriculum (sp?) that might help both the teacher and me? thanks in advance - laurie

Have you searched woodbine for books? That might be a great place to start.. also... I think there is a book called "making inclusion work" or something like that.. I just googled it and found stuff.. or if you google "inclusion modifications special ed" there are some books that come up first.. and some sites.. I found this one off the cuff, looks like teachers that commented on helpful stuff that helped them? www.pacificnet.net/~mandel/SpecialEducation.htmlI am suppose to be packing for a trip LMAO.. so let me go pack and see what I can find for ya later! Oh.. I did get a book back a few years ago when I joined our PAC and it's called "kids with special needs", Information and Activities to promote awareness and understanding. It's by Veronica Getskow and Dee Konczal. I had a mom already borrow it once. It has activities and suggestions on awareness stuff which might have helpful stuff for activities with inclusion stuff??? I haven't fully looked at the book but I have heard it's helpful. Try googling!!! A.

thats a great website A, thanks! I did buy a few of the Woodbine books and also found a few great books at ACDS (MM's preschool) that should be helpful -- I'm going to do some "homework" tonight and see if there's anything helpful in the books I found. I don't want to overwhelm her teacher, or make the teacher think I'm pushy (LOL) but I want them to know I'm serious about this and want to help if they need it. If you come up with anything else let me know - i'll also look into that other title you mentioned. thanks ! and have a great trip! hugs, laurie

Laurie, I dont have any suggestions but I'm feeling you. You must be nervous with starting Kindy and all. I think its great you are trying to do all that for the teacher. I wish i had the time to do more stuff like that but now I have a 4 year old starting preschool next week, a 2 year old starting daycare two days a week and of course Jameson who will be starting his new Kindergarten with new teacher and aide! Oh and did I mention I'm working full time now.
*sigh* i hope it gets easier as they get older! My thoughts are with you guys! I hope you all have a great first day!!

Susan Peoples is the author. The title is something like, "Teaching Children with Down Syndrome." I am almost certain Woodbine carries it. It is a short, easy read with very specific suggestions.

Hi Laurie, I know I am a little late in this but wanted to respond. When Kallie started Kindy I didn't give the teacher any book but I did make it known that I have literature available should he want some. Kindergarten was an amazing year cause a lot of the reading that they learn is sight words and from what I have heard and what worked for Kallie that was awesome and she soared in Kindy. Good luck with everything! Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions! ~Christina~

Christina - thanks - I loaned the teacher a few books (I offered and she said yes) and she'd get them back to me in a few weeks, and now several months later she still has them! She says she's found them informative & helpful, so I'm glad. They are doing a lot of sight words too, and its amazing to see MM sound stuff out and see it actually work! thanks again - laurie
