Any suggestions on how to add specific socialization situations to IEP? I have gone to 2 schools to see about where Haley will attend middle school. One program is lifeskills, one academic - soooooooo not doing the lifeskills. FYI totally tried to have an open mind but I"m floored by what the professionals suggest since I have now seen the program.
The problem w/this is that the "professionals" who are suppose to know are suggesting lifeskill classes for her - not after what I saw. So I need to go into her IEP with specific things I want written in for socialization in an academic environment. This will still be a resource type class 8-10 or so students but more emphasis placed on academics - they implied there isn't a social compenent - so I say, let's create one! Now I just need suggestions on what to put in this "social compenent" for my almost 11 y/o daughter. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Just curious to what you find out about the "lifeskills" class that was not good. Just curious what the differences are. My kids only 6 but I am always looking to the future so just wondering what the differences are and why you dont feel they are appropriate. thanks in advance! M

I went to the academic program about 1 month ago. I viewed 2 classes, math and english - math they worked on 1 problem, simplyfying fractions and english they are reading the grade level book (forgot the name), they read less than 1 chapter, each taking turns. As I'm watching I'm thinking, Haley can soooo do this. Mind you "they" suggested Lifeskills. When I think of lifeskills I think of things like checkwriting, shopping, public trans. Don't get me wrong, these are things that are important for her to learn, just not at 11 years old!
But I tried to keep an open mind and wanted to see this Lifeskills program, maybe I'm way off in my thinking. NOT! There were 8 children, very nice, polite and inquisitive (sp) wanted to know about Haley, her pets, where she goes to school, so can you guess that alot of the time I was there was eaten up by all of this. Enjoyable, but as far as classwork, there wasn't tooo much going on. Teacher and aide were very nice but I definetly feel there will be no challenges for Haley if she is put into this environment. Now what I need to do is have it written into the IEP - specific socialization situations that I want to be included in the academic program.

What about afterschool sports? How about a peer program implemented for Haley to have a 'buddy" at school? I am not quite there yet with Russell.. we have a few years... but I will assure you Russell would be in the life skills classes LOL A.

For socialization, check into clubs the school has, any type of service organization. Laura belongs to an organization called Service over Self, and participates in lots of service project. Also look at sports teams. Laura has served as the manager for the girls' basketball team.
