Hey all,
Well last week I visited two schools and plan on seeing a few more.
As you may remember I was feeling VERY pressured by SPED to attend a school "they selected" for me.....
Well, I went to see it and I DON"T think it is appropriate for Erin for a VARIETY of reasons. So I am formulating my letter to them to let them know that I reject that idea and I will list VERY specific reasons why.
The second school I went, I liked VERY much.....(Melmark) has a VERY good reputation in the PA area and they are new to our area....Autism is their "specialty".....I am SHOCKED by how small it is (100 students from age 3-22) and of course the wait list could be years long. They don't give you a "number"....but look at each case individaully and "match" the opening ( age, etc)
So for my "ideal" I'd like to stay put, and wait for an opening.
I had a friend who advised me of something that NEVER even occured to me.....she said " don't agree to any outplacemetns unless you are SURE you want it to be long-term. If you agree to the school THEY want and even if you agree it is Temporary until an opening comes....it is DIFFICULT to switch out because you would then need to PROVE that the other school is failing goals, etc." In other words, you can't switch out because something better has opened. You need a verifiable reason to move along.
So, my new motto is " don't rush me !" I am taking my time and making a CORRECT choice.
Besides all the school stress ( looking at new schools, bus aide and ST Problems), I am in the process of taking Ex BACK to court and I am carless ( my car died in June, I was "borrowing" a car from my dad, and that one gave out, too....so I am also car-shopping.....
Isn't summer supposed to be relaxing ??
