Collin's IEP is coming up Monday. While mine have never been BAD I still dread them...they are an emotional time for me. So here is my question. Collin will be going into 1st grade and actually getting grades not just P, S, N ect...How does your school grade? Do they get grades based on the modifications? For example, say he has a math test and it has been modified for him...instead of 10 questions he only has 5. If he gets all 5 right does he get an A or does he get and F because of not doing the 10? Does that make any sense. Also, Do you guys have any things that were added to your 1st grade IEP that where helpful? I know I'm going to add use of a calcultor to his IEP for test, plus still have them work on hand on math. Anything else I should be thinking about? Thanks, Connie

Connie, been along time sence my oldest, Mary, was in frist grade. All of her report cards are put away in her school chest. I do believe we delt w/ S's and N's though and not A-F. This is what I know now days though. If they modify a test or assignment for my daughter, they grade her on a modified grade chart they have. I totaly understand your question. Let's say the class has a 40 question worksheet. Mary will have to do 30 the teacher picks out. If she gets at least 25 right, A, and so on. I only allow modified asignments or tests if I approve. They have to let me know. I'm a big pain in the butt for them Mary needs help in areas which require reading alot of things. Word problems, mutipal choice, things like that. She has a horrible time w/ memory recall too. I think, but am not sure your "laws", that if a child has modified assignments, they get graded on a modified grading chart. Have you checked Wrights Law? They might know for sure. I use that sight ALOT!!! Good luck to you for 1st grade What a fun time that was. P.S. I cant think of who it was who posted a IEP "list" but it's out here not tooo many days ago. It was a good one w/ great questions that I save to use when Brook gets into school.

Connie, you know these are good questions to write down so that you can ask them at your IEP meeting. I would think that they would grade Collin on his own scale, but I also wouldn't count on it, so ask.
About the math: have you found a hands-on curriculum that you like yet? Are you planning on requesting that they use it for him? If he uses a different curriculum, he would have different tests wouldn't he? Or are you going to request specifically that they modify the regular curriculum to be hands-on? Either way, he should have access to the manipulatives during tests, and a calculator would be a confusing addition, I would think. I mean, if he can see the blocks and count their number, why make him type the numbers on a calculator? This is just first grade, after all & won't be dealing with numbers greater than 3 digits (up to 999), especially for him. Just my thoughts.

When Chris attended his home school they graded by modification so if he got all his answers right that were modified he got an A.

To be perfectly honest I never care bout Livs report card. I look at the behavior parts and her grades there and basically she gets all 2's and occasional 3 and sometimes a 1 but not for a long time. At our school our grades are as follows 4=A 3=B 2=C 1=your in trouble lol D She also takes the CAPA testing and those are too easy so this year we have been reading her the state test questions and letting her pick the answer. BUT only her CAPA score counts. I am thrilled she is behaving good and has friends and is doing her simple math and reading. Next year will be the introduction of functional math and reading for Liv. Going into 6th grade can u stand it? My babys growin up.. ((((( She won't be attending our regular middle school... looking at all sorts of different schools. its a toughie but want her to enjoy school and be happy bottom line really... (((HUGS))) Steff
