You guessed it. Son wants to drive. So Dad says to him....
Dad: See that Lawn Service truck parked in the street with the red cones near it? What would you do if you were driving and you saw that?
Son: Use a hand gesture and tell him to get out of the road?
Maybe he is ready to drive?!!!!!!
Hope everyone is doing well.

Yes...driving is a sticky issue, isn't it. I have really strong thoughts on it because a car is a DANGEROUS machine. From observation...many young adults with DS still have reaction times that are slower than normal and take longer than most to make decisions...and sometimes even longer to make GOOD decisions.
I think many of our kids could get a license...especially now that many states have allowed parents to do the training and certification. I see nothing wrong with letting a kid do this if they can pass the test...but I have real reservations when it comes to handing them the keys to drive whenever and wherever.
Emily has several friends with developmental disabilities ...not DS...who drive and I worry about them all the time and am not always comfortable turning Em loose with them. Elvis drives a red Mitsubishi convertable...In our city there is constant road work and so often there will be unexpected detours and other problems that require an instant decision and sometimes this even throws me.
I am also reminded of my Dad who we finally took the keys away from...he said he didn't drive fast...but...her drove so slowly that others got impatient and did dangerous things to get around him.
But driving is a rite of passage that most of us went through and most of our typical kids go through so...guess it is each family's decision about if or when to try this.
Emily still is not eager to learn...Katie and Tony have been pressing her to at least go with them to the school parking lot and try it out. Most of you know her hesitation comes from a HS Young Life Colorado camp go cart experience...LOL.
Anyhow MB...if you teach him...let me know how it goes.

MB, sounds like he is ready to come and drive in Myrtle Beach, lol.
Laura has also decided she will wait until she is 17 before she learns to drive. Only 4 months away. I have decided to handle this in a mature fashion. I told her to talk to her dad about it. ;D

too funny~ we've missed you, MB!!
Just curious if that "hand signal" he's talking about is one I regularly use while driving or an actual "legal" hand signal you might actually find on a written or road test. I think if I had used the one I'm thinking of while taking my driving test, I probably would have failed ;-)

That's funny! LOL!
My son just turned 16 also and has started taking drivers ed classes. It's funny how I was all for it a few short months ago but now that this is actually happening, I'm a nervous wreck!!! I keep telling him he really doesn't need to drive because Mom can drive him anywhere.....a job, school, after school actvities, the movies, his wedding, the hospital with his first born.... I honestly don't see why he has to drive...LOL!
-Trisha (ofcourse I'm just kidding!!!! Kind of.) LMAO!

I didn't want to scare anyone BUT....I tried to teach my oldest son to drive, took him to a empty parking lot at a restaurant...well, he was doing just fine, I had him park in a spot facing the brick building. Then asked him to back up...he put the car in reverse, was looking behind him then put his foot on the gas, I couldn't believe it, the car was in DRIVE! He drove over the bush and hit the brick building! OH MY!!! My daughter was in the back seat and all she could say was "Great Shane...now she'll never let me drive!!" So...I will NOT be teaching Damara to drive I am all set with that!!
