Well,
We finally completed Collin's IEP for 1st grade....there was some miscommunication and they pulled in the wrong 1st grade teacher but....that's ok!! and not a big deal, we will just meet at the beginning of next year. Everyones human and makes mistakes!!!
I did take in Italian Roast Beef again and it went over big. I have to say keeping and open mind and open line of communications is best for all involved and it really does help if you make decisions on a full stomach!!
Collin will be in 1st grade next year and will be pulled out for English and Math everyday. I know most here would not consider that full inclusion but...it works for us. He will stay with his class mates for Social Studies, Science, Library, Gym, Lunch, recess, music and any other specials that come up.
He will be taking math and spelling test but have the number of problems limited until he can be successful, then we will add more problems until he is up to the same number as the other students.
It goes really well when the teachers understand that MOM knows my child will not get everything the other kids do but "THATS OK" as long as he's getting something from it!!!
We talked about getting his AIDE to back off and getting more peer mentoring instead -- When Collin was in preschool I was really big on the 1:1 aide...now I'm not so sure about that...it does have it's place and can be helpful but there can also be some draw backs!!
Funny thing is when I had Collin I thought I was going to have to always fight to get what Collin needed and what I wanted for him but, I am please to admit that "THAT IS NOT THE CASE" and I have found that for me I can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar!!! I found that if I am pleasant (BRING FOOD) and firm but bending I get a lot more than being demanding...but that's just me.... Can you tell...I am really happy about how all of this is going!!!
