How funny I was going to post all these questions about when your kids started to do what, when and I start reading all your posts and alot of you already answered them! Well here they go... When did your babies start eating solids??? What did they start with? Did they have problems swallowing? When did your babies start teething? Or get teeth? When did they sit up on their own? In a highchair? When did they start crawling? Rolling over? OK I know that is alot. Just curious ;D Thanks, Jessika

Jessika, I always want to answer your questions, but it's been SO many years and it's hard for me to remember exactly when Emily did all her "firsts". But I'll try! (I know I could get out her baby book, but that would be too easy!!
The things I remember clearly are these: Emily has never had trouble swallowing. She started solids around the same time as her brothers did, and we started with a bit of baby cereal around 4 months and moved on to veggies (I pureed regular veggies) and baby food fruits. She never had significant texture aversions to anything but slimy foods like peaches, pears, etc. She drank from a straw starting on her 1st birthday. I now know that sippy cups are not recommended, but she drank from a sippy cup for several years........mostly because her mom was overly concerned with spillage!!!
I believe Emily was about 8 months old when she sat up totally unassisted, and about the same time for sitting in a high chair. She spent time in a little chair where her feet could touch the ground with a little table in front of her to play.......suggested by her ST.
One of the things Emily did best as a baby/toddler was crawling! Once she figured it out (9-10 months), she was OFF and moving!!! I always thought that had something to do with why she didn't walk as early as we had hoped.........she was so fast on all 4's, and didn't want to risk walking and possibly falling!!
Emily got her teeth in an unusual order and a bit later than the typical time. That's all I remember!!

I can't remember exactly....but am gonna try:
When did your babies start eating solids??? between 4-6 months (whatever the recommendations were when she was born, I know its later now)
What did they start with? rice cereal, or something similar.
Did they have problems swallowing? not at all
When did your babies start teething? cant remember Or get teeth? exactly on schedule w/ her typical peers...whenever that is supposed to be (and all her teeth came in in the "correct" order)
When did they sit up on their own? In a highchair? When did they start crawling? Rolling over?
I know she rolled over really early...because it was even before a typical child should...like a week or 2 early. can't remember the others but I know she wasn't terribly behind (no more than a month, but I'd have to check her baby book to be sure)...the only thing I do remember is her pulling to stand on a present at her first b-day party, and I *think* that was the first time she had done that...

HI Jess Brooker was a munch mouth and started eating solids ie: rice cereal mixed w/ her formula or water at about 3 months or so. Moved onto vegi's and fruit, Gerber 1's about two weeks after that. We started w/ one thing for a week or two to see if she was alergic to something. Hated pears and carrots. Pretty much ate everything else though, everything in sight. I remember her being 7 months old and eating Thanksgiving dinner w/ us. All mashed up of corse I was really freeked out of her choking so she was well after a year when I would give her something more solid cut up REALLLLLY small Now days she eats everything SHE likes but i'm still a small bite cutter-up-er mommy. Got her teeth 4 at a time all in less than a year. Over and done with I guess Wasn't fun when it was happining but i'm glad it is over and done with, for now. Brook was sitting up at 7,8,9 months. I can't quite remember. Crawling about a year and a half. She did a cute little butt scoot from about one that got her around and she refused to do the crawling. Beware of the butt scoot. I'm learning now and seeing now that this cute little butt scoot has turned her little feet "sideways" (hard to explain. Picture sitting on the floor on your butt with your legs out in front, bent ,and "pulling" yourself along w/ your feet) for so long they PT and Doc are thinking of braces to correct this before and hopefully before permanant damage to tendans and ligaments. Uggggg....... Have a happy day

Justin has always had trouble swallowing...he aspirates almost everything. He has been tube fed since birth. He finally passed on pudding thick foods last fall....but Dr wanted to wait til spring to try feeding. I have been giving him thick bananas or mashed potatoes for about a month or so in very small amts....like a tablespoon total. He is still 100% tube fed....the feeding is just for social, pleasure eating. He is 5 1/2 yrs old BTW>
Justin started sitting independently about 27 months old.
Justin could sit in a high chair well before he could sit independently....his first year closer to 1 yr old is when he first started sitting in one.
Justin started to bunny hop crawl around 28 mos old.
I think he started to cruise furniture about 4 yrs old.
He still does not walk at 5 1/2 yrs old. He can use a reverse kaye walker about 200 feet or can walk holding on to something or someone for short distances. He still gets around mainly by crawling or riding in a stroller.
I think that hit most of your questions. Hope that helps.

Eric started taking solid foods about 6 month...started with rice cereal, fruits, yellow veggies (give one new food for a few days before you try anything else new in case you have a problem with it..then you'll know which food is the culprit). He never had any problems with swallowing, but he did have texture issues. Didn't like "lumpy" stage 3 foods. prefered smooth textures. He started sitting up by self around 1yr. of age.; same for the high chair. rolled over about 6 months. Started walking by himself at about 2 years of age. He didn't get his first tooth till about 13 months old. Lost his first tooth about age 5 years. Oh, by the way, Eric was a premie, 31 weeks gestatiion, so he normally was alittle behind his typical peers (both with DS and not) in his development. Hope this helps.

Oh my gosh...these kinds of questions make me realize I'm getting older! LOL
When did your babies start eating solids?? I remember Angela being about 5 months old, and it was TOUGH WORK getting her to move that food to the back of her mouth because she had such a strong tongue thrust. I also remember the OT giving me a hard time saying "She's not ready yet", but I ignored her. LOL
What did they start with? Angela started with rice cereal.
Did they have problems swallowing? Angela is a liquid aspirator. She didn't have any trouble swallowing solids, but liquids were bad, bad, bad. She also had very severe reflux. At 11 months old she had a nissen fundoplycation done, and a gtube placed. From that time on all liquids were tubed but she could have solids orally.
When did your babies start teething? Or get teeth? Angela seemed to be teething forever....but I don't know that she ever actually did. LOL It is VERY typical for kids with DS to get their teeth late, and in a very unusual order. Actually..no particular order at all. When Angela was 9 months old we discovered while hanging her upside down that she had her very back molar on one side. No other teeth until a top front when she was about 14 months old, and then at 16 months one bottom front. I don't remember the rest after that. It is also common for kids with DS to be missing some teeth all together. We started seeing a pediatric dentist who specializes in kids with disabilities when she was 18 months old. We had an xray done and found she was missing her eye teeth. (found out later they were just VERY tiny and turned funny so they didn't show up on xray.) Another common thing is for their teeth to not fall out on their own. When Angela was 6 she had 7 of her front teeth pulled because everything else was coming in. She IS missing 3 or 4 molars on one side, and when her orthodontic work is done she'll have a bridge placed so her teeth don't move around.
When did they sit up on their own? Angela sat without support at 9 months old.
In a highchair? I have pictures of her in the high chair at 6 months, but I had it rigged! LOL
When did they start crawling? Angela started crawling at 111 months, right after she had her gtube placed. She didn't want to be on her belly anymore!
Rolling over? Hmmm..you know I don't remember this one at all!

Hello Jessika I'm sorry but I'm going to do this a little differently, As I think William is almost exactly a year older than Noah (19th December) I thought I could tell you about what he's doing now, at 17 months. hope you don't mind ;D LOL Foods - William mostly eats table food, he self feeds a lot with a spoon (with a little help ) or finger feeds bite sized pieces. He is a very good eater. Teeth - first tooth near his first b'day, now has 3 at the bottom, top middle 2 and 2 big top ones near the back. Physical - William is sitting really well, can get back up from laying down, rolls, belly crawls and pulls himself up into kneeling, then standing at the sofa or other support. Doesn't cruise around the furniture yet but I guess this will come soon. Hope this helps Keep the questions coming, I was wanting to ask when everyone's kids started walking BTW From what you have already posted about Noah it sounds though he is doing great Lorraine

Lorraine, We were just certain that Emily would be "early" to walk, because she crawled SO well and SO fast, and it seemed like walking was just around the corner. And by 18 months old, she was cruising around the furniture. So, we thought "ANYday now"!!!! By 2 years, she would take several steps toward us and then crash into our arms. At around 2 1/2 years, I started actually getting a bit "worried"!!!!! And just before she turned 3, she finally got to the place where she walked everywhere she went without any crawling. It took a while, but I think she walks "well" now, LOL without what I'd call any gait problems.

When did your baby start solids Ethan started at about six months old, and did fine with baby oatmeal, but when we got to anything with texture, he had major problems with sensory issues, gagging and vomiting. We had to invest a considerable amount of time in oral-motor therapy to overcome those challenges, but he eats REALLY well now, with no tongue thrust.
When did your baby start teething?
You know, this is one of those areas where Ethan totally ignored the projections by the experts, LOL! He got his teeth really early, just like my other kids. Had his first two at five months, and had a full mouthful by less than two years old. They came in the typical order, and were not oddly shaped. He lost his first two teeth just before Christmas last year, so he was almost six, and it was the bottom two that he lost first, which is typical. The adult teeth were halfway through within a matter of days after losing those bottom ones! Just recently he lost the top two, and he's not quite six and a half. I'm curious to see how long those take to come in, because his sister was without her front teeth for over a year!
When did your child sit unassisted? Ethan sat unassisted at about eight months. We helped him by propping him up in front of the Baby Mozart video, and he was motivated to stay upright to watch his movie!
When did your child start crawling and rolling over?
Ethan crawled at about fifteen months, and rolled over at about 4 weeks, which is really young. He had severe reflux, and I think he was desperate to get off his tummy when we put him down for "tummy time"!

You know, I got started thinking about the whole tooth thing....cuz we've been so excited about the lost teeth around here, and I found this chart that shows what "typical" eruption and loss are. I'm not sure this will work, but here goes: www.mchoralhealth.org/pediatricoh/images/tooth_eruption_cht.gifCool! It does! Right-click on it, and it will enlarge!

OK, I grabbed the good old baby book for this one! ;D I just LOVE your questions! We started giving Nicholas rice cereal at 4 mos, partly because he had such a HORRIBLE time trying to suck on a bottle and breath at the same time because of his heart condition, and just wasn't gaining weight! Threw bananas in the mix the next month. He never had trouble swallowing, but did have some texture aversions. I think for the most part he's past that. But if Noah ever displays any texture issues, those #3 jars of baby food are awful for that! Just a little advance warning! They did not work for us at all and have heard others say the same thing. He got his first tooth 3 days before he turned 1, and the next 2 on his b-day. They all came in the right order, and always seemed like he was getting 3 or 4 at the same time. At 7 mos he was able to sit up leaning forward supporting himself with his hands, and was sitting up nice and straight at 10 mos. He was sitting in a high chair at 5 mos, but leaned to the side, so we had him "propped!" He started crawling at 9 mos, for his big brother. Gotta have the right motivation, you know! As for rolling over, that one was just crazy! He was purposely rolling both ways at 17 days old! Talk about one surprised momma!
