Our little guy (9 weeks old now) is off of oxygen in the day and only on it at night. They say this is how they like to wean them. He seems to be doing fine except when he gets excited. Like today, his sisters gave him a bath and he "freaked" out and had a hard time breathing. He was making those little sounds (almost like he was gasping for air). It continued for about 10 minutes (on and off) after the bath. He finally calmed down when I nursed him. Why do they make these noises? He has no heart issues. I believe he has GERD to a minor extent. One nurse (way back in the NICU) said DS kids make these noises. I wish I could send sounds over this board! Any thoughts! By the way, thanks for all the answers. My oldest daughter is on this board under the username Kokie.

Is it an actual wheezing sound or is he just excited and making noises from his throat?
Both of my kids always made noises. It was the funniest/cutest sound - sometimes a little scary though wondering what they were and trying to figure out where they were coming from (ie. throat or chest)
Good Luck!

It is hard to describe the sound. It sounds like wheezing to me but, I have noticed that it comes from his throat also. He is doing it a lot today for some reason. It is kind of freaky to listen to and I wonder if he is breathing alright. I have thought of taping it so I can send copies to anyone who wants to hear it. Plus, we have a doctor's appt. on Monday and maybe the doctor's might know what it is.

This sounds odd...maybe you need to call the doctor and ask...not wait until Monday.

When Carter was on oxygen he would make these squeaking sounds sometimes. So much so that one of the nurses thought it was my rocking chair one day! jerk doctor was there and took it as an opportunity to tell meone more thing "wrong with him". Feel my love even now? Basically it's squeaky larnyx from dryness. Carter does get croupy now and i wonder if that's part of it (the oxygen and his vocal cords and how they were irritated) but I would never ask jerk face LOL! That might be it - worth a mention!

Does it sound 'throaty' like he has mucous in his throat and when he is breathing in and out the mucous is moving?
Sorry, that's the best way I can describe it.
A wheeze actually comes from the chest, you CAN hear it if you put your ear to their chest if it's bad enough.
I have mistakenly thought the throaty sound (even to this day), was wheezing sometimes.
It could be a sinus drainage thing/small sinus cavity thing, or it could be refux coming up into his throat as well, that will make a gurgle sound.
But I agree with Jackie, I wouldn't wait until Monday to have him evaluated. If it's wheezing, it could get worse.
Good Luck!!

Well, Russell has always made odd sounds, still does. The times I could have SWORN it was "wheezing" it was more of what Paige's mom described... the flem(mucous) trying to move... Russell has severe reflux and it was SO bad when he was younger, he was always breathing raspy and sounding wheezy. But as Paige's mom mentioned, the difference is you can HEAR it when you put your ear to their chest, or back area.
Also, if a child is truly wheezing in the asthmatic sense, they look like they are struggling and can get lethargic when trying to breath. Not all kids, but this is what Russell does so I know when it's something more serious. He had to have Albuterol once when he was younger for one true wheezy attack. And we also have to keep around an inhaler now since he has had attacks after swimming... he sometimes gets clorine induced asthma/wheezing. We were in Chicago when it happened twice.. Ask Susan, Emily's mom LOL... I was yelling for her... we almost had to visit the hospital. Russell was so wheezy he could NOT move or breath.. he just layed on the bed...
So I know now the difference. All the other noises Russell makes, moving mucous and throaty sounds, he is mobile and active and it's just part of him and due to the reflux. Some of his throaty sounds are how he communicates also....
