We visited a church a couple of weeks ago that pairs kids with special needs with an adult or high school student. When we visited I wasn't too impressed the first time around. At that time we didn't have a partner, and so we went to the children's program with Ryan, then to the Sunday school room. The teacher was asking all the kids what their summer plans were. Ryan used his device and said "I am going to Disney World". He was BEAMING when he said it. The teacher didn't understand him, and said "oh, that's nice" and then went on to the next child. I felt bad for Ryan but I know things like this will happen. We ended up leaving early because Ryan couldn't really participate in the things they were doing and he was getting restless.
So today we met our partner. I was skeptical, but she turned out to be really good. Ryan was overwhelmed with the music and dancing at first and walked out of the room. She came out. I said he gets overwhelmed sometimes, and she said that's okay, she does too! She treated Ryan with respect and talked to him like a normal child, which is all I ever hope for.
She is going to send us bible story lessons earlier in the week so we can help Ryan prepare for Sunday... that way he may be able to participate more. He is not so good at comprehension so this will help a lot. They verbally shared a bible story today, and so Ryan was completely lost when it came time for questions and answers. When they asked him "What was David?" He said, "Sea World" LOL! I told his partner he will do that sometimes when he doesn't understand the question. Again she said "me too".
So yay, we may get back into a church
