Son has a job.
Not just any job. The job he has been planning on for two years. He wanted to work at a particular restaurant, asked for an application, bugged me endlessly to follow up and has been working for 5 weeks.
He has already been promoted from chip and salsa server to host duties because he learned the table numbers within two days.
He has a promotion plan in place. I worked with the restaurant management to encourage them to develop one with concrete requirements such as on-time arrival and proper uniform.
We also talked very frankly about not only his strengths and the importance of playing to them, but also laid out his challenges such as visiting too much with cute blondes.
He does not have a job coach. I had a meeting with his primary contact manager today and she told me we all had underestimated his abilities and work ethic. She went on to say that they absolutely love having him at the restaurant and will work around any scheduling challenges he may have during the school year.
He keeps track of his schedule and works his social life around work. He launders his uniform as soon as he comes home and hangs it up in the designated place so he can grab it and go if we are ever running late.
He is very, very happy.
We have been preparing for this for 16 years. It is incredibly satisfying.
Thanks for reading!

I love these stories, too. I think with good planning and support many of our kids can do this, too! I hope all works out!
Some of you may remember the story of the young man with DS who opened up a gift shop at a hospital. He's doing so well, he has someone working for him, and he's due to open a smoothie shop in the same hospital soon! (He does have a job coach.)
I am encouraged by each of these young men!
