Ok so Brook has a new "trick".... NOT a good one either When she drinks from a cup she will take too big of a drink and choke and water flies out her nose and mouth. So, we practice small drinks. It works sometimes. Now she has started barfing a little bit after she is done w/ her milk and I think some is being asperated b/c she is choking and gaging and I have to bang on her to "clear out" what ever is going on. We have done a swallow study a year and a half ago and all looked good. Could she develop asperation issues now that she is bigger? I'm going to call the doc first thing in the am and request another swallow study and maybe a xray of her lungs just to see. And of corse, you know me, when she goes to sleep I listen to her lungs and can kinda hear a little gurgle. Can't quite tell if she is snoring or it's inside. No sleep for the momma b/c i'm so freeked out!! Anyone have this happen when their kid got bigger? What did you do? I'm also wondering if maybe her tonsils are getting bigger and she is having a hard time swallowing. I'm so confused

Aspiration can happen at any point and time. Sadly it happens to kids with special needs alot more than typical kids. First thing I do ask for a swallow study and go from there. BUT the down fall she can be 'clear' on aspiration and still have delay silent aspiration.
Does she still have tonsils? it is possible something else is going on too! There are several things you can do to help build up the throat muscle. Like making the EEEK sound and longer you hold it and louder, the better. We started doing this before drinking and meal time. ALong with HEHEHEHE Sound and we do chin tucks. It all part of before we eat and drink... does it work.. not sure.. I like to think so.
Also drinking out a straw it better than sippy cups ... also sometimes the open cup is too much. With the straw build up muscles and control the liquids.
There also possible it reflux!
Good Luck and keep us posted.

Yes Brook still has both T and A's. She had reflux when she was new born but I thought we have been past that for along time. Were just learning to use a straw. We will practice more!! We always do our silly sounds and she tries but..... well, she makes noise I sure hope she will be ok. I've been watching her like a chicken hawk for a couple weeks now and I think it's getting worse

Glad you're going to call the doc in the AM. Could be several things, as Cynthia said..............large tonsils narrowing her esophagus could be something relatively easy to fix, so maybe we should pray for that! You're on top of it. See what the doc says and let us know. Watch for a temperature an hour or so after she chokes. It's good that she's coughing! With silent aspiration, the liquids go into the respiratory passages quietly without a struggle and without triggering the urge to cough it out. If she's coughing well, no need to pat her on the back.....she'll cough up the liquid on her own. A good ST can also be a wonderful asset with aspiration.
Oh, and in elderly patients, when they are aspirating, the first thing we do is to take away all straws. Straws can allow more liquid to enter the mouth too fast for them to handle. We sometimes even have to give our patients liquids by teaspoonfuls.

Well, we went to the doc first thing today. They put her on Ranitidine {generic for Zantac} Dr. Tami, who was in a much better mood today , is going to call the SLP at Doernbeckers who we saw way back in the day and see if he wants to do a swallow study again or check the "mechanics" of Brookers throat to make sure nothing funny is going on. Her tonsils looked ok and her ears too. So we will wait and see what Mike {SLP} wants to do. Should call by Friday. Thanks for your help girls Oh, her lungs sounded ok too BUT she has lost two and a half pounds in 38 days. WAY to much for Dr. Tami to be ok with so she is concerned about that. Another thing to think about I thought my little pork chop was doing good w/ her weight but somewhere we lost some Maybe she is just growing taller

Loosing weight is a sign for reflux... rather we think so or not. Glad you was able to get her in and hopfully Zantac will do her good. Glad the tonsil looked good.. and the ears.. that good too!
Keep us posted...

SLP Mike called and we will go see him next week. Another swallow study. He thinks that she is refluxing stuff in her nose again like she did when she was littler. Uggg.... we'll see how it goes. I gave her the medicine and now she won't eat her dinner. The medicine does taste like crap... yuck.

Hi there....I can't believe that I never saw this post!!!@ I'm so sorry I didn't respond to you...I'm glad they are getting her in quickly for the swallow study...how scarey for you and her. And the weight loss? That seems like alot for such a little peanut in a short period of time. It must be all related, sounds like if you fix one issue the other will be fixed too? Please keep us updated and I will be sure to check this section!!!

You can ignore my question in the other post, If I would have read this first I would have seen what the probelms are that she is having, lol.. It really does sound like Reflux and hopefully the meds do help. Keep us posted though and let us know how the Swallow Study goes.

Stevie only had one symptom of aspiration - failure to gain weight. She had no fluid in her lungs. She never "choked" or coughed. She never even vomited - and barely ever spit up. The thing was, she was successfully clearing her airway, it just took up too many calories to clear the airway. The swallow study told the sad tale, though. Brooker's sounds like GERD, though. And it's far more likely that that would cause that big a weight loss than airway clearing could account for. But then again, what do I know? I do hope that the Zantac works for Brooker. It did nothing for Stevie, but that worked out just fine - insurance would only cover Prevacid if Zantac failed, so that forced their hand. She's been on Prevacid since she was 4 months old & it works for her. For her the signs of GERD are: snotty nose, buggery eyes, and night-time waking. Also her breath smells slightly of bile. Yuk Poor Brook. (((((Brook))))) She should soon be your li'l porkchop again!

Chris... Brooks breath smells horid. I can brush her teeth 5 times a day and still stinkkkkky Then dad noticed her ear smelled bad too the other day. So, we went to see Steve the SLP at Doernbeckers and Brook did not do so well. She was being a little booger and not doing what she was told. The first drink of milky barium and it was over. We tried everything, milk, juice, fish cracker, yogurt, oreo cookie etc but she is so smart she says " uhhh NOOOOOO". They did manage to get a pic of two swallows where she was not bouncing around. Of corse Steve says "she did fine" but momma knows better. After we were done and Brook had enuf we reviewed the footage. Oreo cookie goes right where it is spose to go, imagine that?!! Mostly we sat there and chuckled b/c all you see is the skeleton of little Brookster bouncing all around being a goofy. He wants her to see an ENT guy in a couple weeks to check her ears and even says something about sticking some sort of camera down her nose to look around. Mom says "Uhhh NOOOO". I'm not to comfortable w/ that idea. We can see the ENT but there will be NO sticking anything down her nose!!!!!!! He up'd her dose of Zantac and sent us on out way. Dr. Tami should call today and see what she thinks. So pretty much NOTHING was discovered and we sit and wonder why Brooker is doing this again and take the Zantac. It seems to be helping though. Kids, I tell ya!!! There gunna be the death of me... LOL

Well, first of all I can't blame her on the barium drink. I think that stuff is just gross! nice to hear the cookie went down well....that must be a good sign. I sure hope they figure out what is going on for you all. Nothing more frustrating than having something wrong and not knowing what it is, so you can fix it. Good luck with the ENT and I sure hope that Dr. Tami is in a great mood when she calls you.
