I have an almost 6 month old son with Down syndrome. He was diagnosed at 3 months old but only after I asked for the blood test. I have started a blog about my experience so far. If anyone is interested you can view it at www.trisacharm.blogspot.com. I have so many questions, some more serious than others but my husband and I had a random thought today....the baby is just starting to get some hair on his head and we realized that almost all pictures or people we've seen with DS have straight hair. Both of our older sons have curly hair so we are wondering if there is any chance our baby will get some curls? Anyone know?? This is such a silly first post but it's on my mind tonight ! I hope to spend some time on the board ! Jen

Hello Jen Welcome to Uno mas, it's great to have you here I'm Lorraine, Mum to William who is 19 months old and has DS. I also have two older girls and we live in the UK. As for curls, My younger daughter has curly hair so we too were wondering what William's would be like, and now it's getting longer he has lots around his ears Don't worry about your questions sounding silly, ask away. I'm going to have a look at your blog now. Lorraine

WELCOME TO UNO MAS, Jen! So glad you found us!!! I'm looking forward to hearing more about your family and watching your little one grow up. There is no such thing as a silly question here. We've probably all wondered about any and all questions in the past, so ask away! As for curls.........Hmmmm! My hair is straight as a stick, and my husband's has always had a bit of curl. All of our children have just a bit of a wave. My daughter with Ds has just a bit of a wave in her hair; rather than any true curls. When she was a baby, her hair was thick and straight. When I went to the NICU to visit her for the first time, the nurses had pulled her thick hair up at the top of her head and put a bow in it.......LOL at just a few hours old!
Oh, and don't pay any attention to all the curls in Emily's hair in the photo here...........it took hours to put them there!!
Again......Welcome!

My daughter Elizabeth is 16 months old and has always had LOTS of hair. It's been very straight but lately we are noticing the ends are starting to wave. No actual curls yet, but who knows? My older kids have straight hair and so do I, but my husband has curls? ? And welcome to UNO! No such thing as a silly question. As a matter of fact, I think I may have asked the same question when E was about 6 months old. haha Sheryl

Welcome to the Uno Mas family! My daughter has straight, fine hair and I have straight, fine hair, too. My husband has fine, curly hair (at least the hair he has left on his head). I have heard that most white people with Ds have straight hair. Chris

Hi there, wanted to welcome you to Uno....My daughter has extreme curly hair, however, she is also 50% African American. I have not heard about DS children having straight hair. It seems to me that typically caucasion people have straighter hair anyway in majority, I wonder if that just makes is seem this way. I have to say that I actually think this is a pretty interesting question. I'm curious to find out...Thanks for asking, and please be sure to tell us more about your family!!!

I know of another family on another board who have a 5 year old (I think, lol) with Ds and his whole family has curly hair, as does he. His family is Orthodox Jewish so they don't cut their boys' hair until they're 3, so he had LONG curly hair. It was beautiful. As for my Sarah's, it's stick straight, but most of our family's is, too.
