He was the son of Coach Gene Stallings, former coach of the University of Alabama football team, along with also coaching a pro team. John Mark had Down Syndrome. Coach Stallings always had John Mark with him when he coached at Alabama, and John Mark loved Alabama football. Coach Stallings also is a huge advocate for people with disabilities. He wrote a book about his life with John Mark. Coach Stallings truly used his experiences to help other parents, including calling new parents and talking with them about John Mark and his life. blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/08/john_mark_stallings_the_son_of.htmlSharon

Prayers to the Stallings family. I hadn't heard of this family before, but upon reading the news articles about them, I am so moved by the great love of this father for his son. What a terrific family.

Prayers to the Stallings family. I hadn't heard of this family before, but upon reading the news articles about them, I am so moved by the great love of this father for his son. What a terrific family. They definitely are a great family. Coach Stallings took John Mark with him almost everywhere, and is a great ambassador for inclusion in every day life, just by his example. And countless lives were touched by John Mark during his Dad's tenure at Alabama. Sharon

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this! We had heard so many good things about Coach Stallings and how involved his son was with the football team. I know he'll be missed by many! Susan

One of the articles I just read had this quote from Gene Stallings just after hearing that his son had been born with Down syndrome:
"We cried a bushel of tears." The article then says: "Those tears turned into a lifetime of smiles. "
I think that is so descriptive of most of our families here............saddened at first, followed by a lifetime of smiles with our kids.
