This is for anyone who knows the latest in technology on machines for books for the blind.
In case you have wondered why I am online a lot lately (other than my big mouth..LOL)..This week my FIL who is 90 blind and almost deaf arrived for a month's stay with us. He has been blind since he was injured in WW2. He is a brilliant man..a chemical engineer before the war...and then retrained as a Ph.d psychologist with the VA system. Long story but now he lives out in the country without access to some things.
I know that there is new technology out for reading. He is finding not much available to him anymore and I am sure it has to do with his antiquated equipment. I can spend hours searching for all this myself...but was hoping someone here had a quick start for me.

Are you looking for books? Or a devise that "reads" the book to him? I'm not sure what antiquated means. My grammy was blind too after diabettes got to her and she had books that read to her. Well, cd's that told the story

You can e-mail the American Blind Federation or Association and see what they have. Or you can talk to the library on 45th street and see if they can help you. You need to ask for Valissa. She is the head librarian there. If you can't get her then ask for Brad. He is at the reference desk. These people work during the day I believe........... Debbie

Thanks to everyone...you have given me some great leads. My FIL is 90...and is pretty set in his ways. I think he is afraid of switching to a new format to listen to his talking books. He doesn't like audio CDs because he cant find his place in them and he also can't speed up the sound. With his cassette reader he can increase the rate of speaking by 300%!...speed reading , I guess...LOL.
I am learning a lot this month...both about visual problems and also elder care. I think he also has what we all want to avoid with our kids and that is "learned helplessness" where someone has intervened more than necessary and created a false dependence on others. But I love him so despite the difficulty of all this...glad we can be in his life again for a while.
Thanks again Jackie
