I just took Collin to a med check in Indy to day.
For those interested he is 8 and has ADHD. He responds well to Ritalin and it's different forms but is now on Vyvanse 20mg and it is working GREAT!!!
But, on to the real reason of my post, especially those with older kiddo's. Collin's doctor at the DS clinic (Dr Escobar) is starting a double blind clinical study of the effects of Aricept on kids from 6-10 years old and he asked Collin to be in it.
I know of one mom who's experienced Aricept here but I was wondering if there were other out here?
I am looking for info on how kids responded and any side effects.
Thanks for any help!!

Connie...I have a friend who is a neurologist here. She has given up her practice to lecture for a drug company all over the US. This is a brilliant woman and one of her drugs is Aricept. She thinks we really should put Emily on it and says that very soon it will be recommended for all with DS.
To make a long story short...I turned this over to my resident physician, Ed...LOL...and told him to get in touch with her to get all the details.
Of course he hasn't...sigh...so Em is not using it but probably will in the future. I can probably hook her up with you if you want more info.

If it works let me know. Lauren just started Adderal last month and it isn't working too well.

The studies with Aricept being used in children/teens/young adults with Ds has more to do with improvements in speech; not for behavior management like Ritalin, Adderal, etc. We tried it for a while with Emily and had mixed feelings about it. We've been talking about giving it a try once again.

Hmmm...I've done a little investigating on this since I had not heard about it. I find it very interesting and think I will have a chat with Damara's Dr. I wonder if there is an age issue? Since she is only 4, it seemed that it may be more for older children/adults? Gonna check anyway.

HI!! I am Jennifer and I am mom to Evan who has ds and he is 6. I actually work in Clinical Drug Trials in Shreveport, Louisiana, and we were asked to participate in the trial with Children with DS and giving them Aricept. I work in a psychiatric hospital and was excited that the company was even considering doing a trial with DS population. Unfortunately, our site did not take the study--we didnt feel we were adequate enough to have a study of that calibur--but It was very exciting to see that though. I was talking to one of our dr's who specializes in children and he thought it could make a difference, but since it is not approved for children--he had not used it in his practice. So if you or anyone has an opportunity to participate, go for it!!!!! I think it would be awesome--Keep me posted!!! I would love to see how it does.

Hello,
They did start the study but the company pulled it because they said they did not see the type of inprovement they were looking for but, the doctor said he they were not looking at social skills, communication etc...so, the patients that were in the trial are now taking Aricipet off brand...
We are considering trying it with Collin.
