Sorry gals don't mean to whine BUT my little Character is very sick and I am tired and sad tonight I have been on the phone with 3 Docs today and they all disagree on what to do so in the mean time they are doing nothing, GRRRRRRRR to them They ALL promise me by tomorrow they will come up with a plan but Geeez in the meantime Chris is sooo sick and not a happy camper His sinus' are totally infected, he has not said one word the whole day, not had anythign to drink and forget bout eating a thing and OMG the mucus (sp?) is coming out from the eyes, mouth and nose, very gross actually. I feel soooo bad and can't sleep cause Chris is gagging on this stuff due to his low tone Man they went from them telling me when he was a baby that he will grow out of this did they mean 21 years of age or WHAT , to have his tonsils out will make a big difference, NOT, for my Character, Hmmmmm he is gonna be 12 soon seems like he might not grow out of and now tow of them are talking bout sinus operation. They have talked to me bout this before and both Colin and I have said NOOOOOOO. After the bad and I mean bad experience we all had with the tonsil removed Noooooo way would we consider an operation on our guy unless life and death. What really SUCKS is we have been to three Docs and three opinions and sadly none of them agree K, sorry to be a downer tonight, just tired I guess. Thanks for letting me spill it all out, as always you guys keep my brain from popping CC ~

I'm sorry....I feel your pain. I've got two little girls here who are having the exact same problem. Even with giving them cold meds to dry up their noses they are still gagging on stuff. (Have you, if you can that is, tried giving him anything to dry up his sinuses? I don't know if he had heart surgery, in which case cold meds are probably not an option...but Benadryl would probably be okay? We also love the Vapor Patches, those things are wonderful.)
We just went through the T&A surgery with my oldest who has DS....she bounces back immediatly from everything....but her T&A surgery was 21 days ago and she is just barely starting to get back to normal. Lost 5lbs, had to get fluids twice...got an infection at the surgical site and was practically comatose from that for a week. We did the surgery for sleep apnea, and hoping it would improve other aspects too....my younger daughter still wakes up a couple times a night at 11 months old, and the Pulmonologist wants to do a sleep study on her. I said there is absolutely NO WAY....if he wants a sleep study and possible T&A done on her, then HE is taking her home with him! I was anti surgery before, but I am so beyond anti surgery now!
I certainly hope that he feels better....all of our kiddos could definitely use a break from being sick!

Christie,
Sorry that Chris is feeling so bad....maybe the doc's can come up with a plan of attack to help him feel better. We went thru this the whole month of October with Eric. He had a massive sinus infection...3 different antibiotics, numerous decongestants(which he does horrible on), and saline drops in his nose. I can't tell you how many times I had to suck out his little nose, and the kleenex...we went thru 3 boxes in a week! Then he got croup on top on that...thought i was going to have to take him to the hospital a few nights, but we got thru it with the help of steroids. He missed 3 weeks of school! So I can understand how you feel. These guys just pick this stuff up so quickly...I think its because their features are so small and that makes the nasal areas small too. So anything with the sinuses is doubly bad for them. But I gotta admit, I work in a pediatric office and I have NEVER seen so much sinusitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, and croup in my life!! Yesterday we diagnosed 4 kids with pneumonia...and these are kids who are otherwise healthy, non risk children. I don't know why its exceptionally bad this year, but it is. And we haven't even gotten into flu season yet!! I hope Chris has a good day today, and he's able to sleep well tonite...and you get some rest too!! You know mamas can't get sick!!

:(So sorry ((Hugs)) to you girl. Give a hug to that boy of yours too :(I'd rather you be posting about playing on rock piles instead of having Chris being sick. I hope he gets better soon. Have you noticed docs PRACTICE medicine. I was a pre-med major, one thing I noticed was the more I knew, the more I realized we didn't know. I hope they come up with a solution very soon!! That works!!! Pat

:(Sorry to hear about Chris. Hope he's feeling better soon. MeKyah got congested a lot during her younger months that always required antibiotics to get rid of it. Seems like as she gets older she gets it a little less frequent. Sometimes she can wake up breathing clear as a button. Then she eat and I start getting her ready for daycare. By the time I'm done, she's sounding clogged and need suction. This just happened this morning. She can go to bed fine and sometime wake up clogged or wake up fine but before we leave for daycare, she can be clogged. We always run a cool mist humidifier and I think it helps a lot. I just don't understand when she sound fine one minute but the next minute she's clogged. Anyway, I really hope Chris is feeling better soon. Jeannette

Hey, CC, I would be more sympathetic if I weren't so sleep deprived. My little guy Charlie has had something going on for 3 days now. Lots of mucous but none coming out of his eyes, thank God. I did decide he could go without his contact lens today. We've been giving him Tylenol, pseudofed (sp?), Flovent, albeuterol (sp?!). Last night switched back to giving him Xopenex by nebulizer instead of albeuterol by puff chamber. Seemed to help the breathing but he finally dozed off for about an hour at 4:30. I'm waiting for a call for when we can take him in to see his ped. Want him to check ears, nose, and those big, red tonsils--and check for strep. Maybe there're a bunch of bad bugs in the air in NJ at the moment. Heard some news report of day care center having all the kids and workers break out in a bad rash. Hope both our guys perk up soon. In sympathy, Bob

I agree there's something really bad in the air in NJ. A lot of sinus infections and respiratory things going on around our neck of the woods. My deepest sympathy goes to you CC! This was our life last year, until my son had his adenoids removed. Life definately improved after that. I hope you can get at least two dr's who can agree and find something to give poor Chris some relief. My heart melts to think of him suffering. Hoping things look better this morning!

I just wanted to add a theory. My dad had celiac disease. So, I am assuming the genetic link (even though it can't be proven) to the Down syndrome is through him.
He would get a horrific cold every year at this time. I used to tell him to get on an antihistimine as soon as the leaves started falling. There seemed to be a direct link to him getting sick and the leaves falling.
Our son would get croup when the leaves would fall. Our leaves fall after a cold, cold rain in late October and early November. When he was in first grade, we found him bugged eyed, thrashing and completely without any air flow. This came on suddenly in the middle of the night and, of course, during the first week of November. It was a cold, rainy night with newly fallen leaves. He was rushed to the hospital and spent 24 hours getting breathing treatments. He had no prior history of breathing/asthma/bronchial problems.
So, I am wondering if our little kids would benefit from an antihistimine given at night during the time that the leaves fall. That would be a two-three week period. I have no idea what the long term effects of antihistimine use are. Would love to start a discussion.
Finally, my son did grow out of the sinus/croup stuff. He did have his first bout of pneumonia last summer.

MB,
I think you are right about the antihistamines...the infectious disease doc prescribed zyrtec at bedtime for Eric...we started giving it to him in August..."allergy" season usually starts around august 20 here in ohio. Unfortunately, the zyrtec made Eric "mean"...his whole personality changed. So we stopped. We are now in the process of looking for another antihistamine that doesn't make him weird out. My doc told us that it is a common side effect with ANY child (antihistamine use). Hopefully we can find the right combination of meds that will keep him breathing ok this winter. I think facial structure of our children is a major factor in why they get so stuffy. The nasal passages, ear tubes, etc usually are more narrow than usual, and can cause problems. I remember Eric's ENT telling me he had the smallest ear canals he has ever seen....they have to use a microscopic device to check him. So I'm sure that doesn't help. Prayers going out to all our kids that they have a healthy winter. I hate to hear of any child being sick (I deal with that all day at work), and especially our kids here, who I feel I've come to know and love.
