I know there are a couple of people here ...and probably some lurkers...who live along the Texas Coast. My heart goes out to you and I hope you are now somewhere safe. I just heard the report...ALL STRUCTURES ALONG THE COAST IN THE PATH OF THE HURRICANE WILL BE DESTROYED. That is pretty serious. I have heard they are bringing doctors and nurses into the state and trying to get them licensed in 24 hours.
We are far away from it up here in the Texas Panhandle...but our kids are closer ...yet safe too.

I know is this wild or WHAT? I have never heard warnings as such, before. "if you stay you will die" is basically what my husband heard... a gal we work with in RI said she heard the same thing.....
So wild.. and terrifying!!!!

The wording of the warnings issued by the National Weather Service is terrifying. Our family's prayers are with those in the path of this storm.

We, too have been praying for everyone down there. My gut tells me that the reason for the harsh wording to evacuate is because of what happened with Katrina. Too many people decided to weather the storm and not heed the warnings. Too many people perished because of this. I think they were trying to evacuate everyone and have no loss of life and the only way to do it is be harsh.

We are very safe...very far away from the TExas coast...and not at all in the path of it as it weakens. I am anxious to talk to my kids in Austin to see if they are filling up there with evacuees. The kids middle school is going to house quite a few if needed.
I think its going to be bad in the next few weeks for sure. Emily lived in the Clear Lake/Seabrook area when she worked for Noreen. I am sure she is anxious to get an email from her...they were glued to their TV in Austin last night. That is such a beautiful area and its sad to see it so damaged. We also stay at the San Luis in Galveston when we go. That is the hotel they are broadcasting from.

my bestest bud and my neice are in Katy (35 mil west of Downtown)at bud's new house....they got HORRIBLE winds and an uprooted tree...and a very long night...but so far have maintained power. The cell phones are out except for texting, but the land lines are working.
Local news there says that downtown is total'd...but there are power crews stationed all around the perameter...from all over the country...just waiting for the word to move in.
My parents were due to go down next week, with my sis & BIL (neice's parents) but have cancelled the trip....it's going to be a month before the downtown area is usable...the tall towers lost a good portion of their glass....along with the flooding.
There are some FABULOUS housing areas right off the downtown area, where all those bankers live (my neice among them) some of those homes are just too beautiful to describe! I can't believe they are all lost....
keep praying

Mollysmom...did you get any of the winds from the storm? My cousin in MO told me that they got 60mph winds and that she could NOT imagine 100+...she said she was scared to death with what they got.

that's exactly what i was thinking at 4am when Ike rolled thru here....we had a cinderblock on a storage container outside, and the block was about 10 fr from the container this morning! i was guessing 50 mph straightlines....blowing sideways
the weird thing about it was there was no lightning or thunder...but the NOISE was scaring the HELL outta me!
we have 3 surrounding towns that are out of power, but we maintained...and the sarge's scanner is screaming with sparking power lines down over houses and vehicles...
we did not flood like we were expecting, except the low water bridges and usual areas..
all i could think of was my friends in Houston, and HOW AWFUL that noise would be, given the speeds would have been TWICE as bad as what we saw!!
