Hey all,
I must admit, I've been a lurker. I see many who are doing well and praying for those who aren't. I still think of you as part of our family. I just don't know how to get into it sometimes.
Meanwhile, the preschool in our district has changed. Emily now goes to a different school. She's actually where I wanted her all along. I love her teacher and she has the ST that I wanted her to have. Apparently she's charmed them all with her good looks. Her teacher even went as far to tell me what a great addition she is and how she brightens up the room. (BTW, I'm raising a human being, not a light bulb!) But her para is terrific and is in total love with her. She has three boys of her own and for the past eight years she has worked with all boys. She was so excited to meet her and brags about her all the time. Most of all she's pushing her!!!
So, this all sounds so wonderful, right? Well seems that the BOE is under a new regime and bringing in new people with new ideas. OK, change is hard, I get that.
Has anyone or does anyone have a child in a school that uses the "Transdisciplinary approach to providing related services in the public schools" or the Colloaborative approach to providing OT/PT/ST? I was just at a meeting last night. It was supposed to be a workshop, but I don't think they understand the meaning of "workshop". It basically was an Asst. Sup. (we've got 6 of them at the BOE) talking at us & telling us that a new system is going to be put into place. Meanwhile, many parents are unaware that it already is!!! If that ain't illegal, it's at least unethical. IEP's remain as they are (for now), so for instance Em receives 2-20 minute sessions of OT/PT/ST and has a personal para.
After the PP presentation, the villagers got angry. Now, I must say something right here. When God bestowed upon me my "special" girl, I prayed for the strength, grace and dignity to get through all of this kind of stuff. What really peeves me is lunatic, emotional parents who try to bully administrators in these types of forums. I don't want to be represented or included with these type of parents.
However, I am just as concerned as they are. Some of the biggest mouths had kids with mild autism and behavioral problems. Nothing to the extreme of my child. I know for a fact that quite frankly, many of such parents have sucked the system dry. Plus the fact that our BOE has had a Superintendent that basically was a crook. While he was suspended he was paid. Meanwhile there was an acting sup...who is now the sup. So if you're a resident of this town, you know a lot of this is budgeting from what's basically them mishandling various situations and not following state mandates which resulted in the loss of $12million.
The next meeting I will probably put on my suit of armor. It's entitled"Fostering Independance and Self-determination". This is where they inform the parents of their next intention. Taking away ALL personal para's and placing two para's to assist the teacher. Em's class is 13 right now. Classes may get bigger. This is intended for the self contained classes. Makes me wonder "what the hell is going to happen?" Hmm, what's more cost effective, ridding para's or dealing with lawsuits when these children hurt themselves or others b/c their not being watched the way they should be?
This all leaves me feeling that they are taking 100 steps backwards. Am I going to go back in time? 1950's anyone? The admin is talking in circles and not answering our questions directly. I hate that we're automatically treated like idiots. Some of us our well educated people and some of us have good common sense.
I feel like Em is totally screwed.
I have been conditioned not to trust the "system." I witnessed a wonderfully orchestrated marketing plan last night. I think they may have sold it to about 3 out of 300. I'm afraid to buy into it.
I know this was long. If you read, ty. If you have advice, comments or experience (good or bad) I would love you to reply. I think it's time to find a new state.
I believe that the reason Gov. Corzine survived his SUV crash was b/c he's actually Satan. He is destroying our schools and our towns. Not going to even touch what they're planning to do to the town.
In case Pat's out there...this is when I hate the DS! This is the stuff that get's me down.
Love to all and thanks,
Christine
