Alright, here's the questions.... Joby and I have been discussing another child. However, with EVERYTHING we went thru to get Elizabeth, a biological child isn't the best bet at this point. So.. we've been looking at Reeces Rainbow and really feel pulled to adopt a child with Down syndrome. (And, there IS one little one born the same month as Elizabeth and is absolutely heart tugging!) However, finances are definately a concern at this point. Not necessarily RAISING another child, just being able to afford to ADOPT the other child. With one in college and 2 in high school and driving ... whew! (with the price of gas, if I took their car keys away, we could probably swing it.. no haha) So, has anyone here ever done this? And does anyone have any ideas about raising the money. A second mortgage, personal loan is out of the question at this point. Any other ideas. It looks like it would cost approximately $20K. I'll take any input. Sheryl

I have always wanted to do an adoption myself. I wanted to adopt a little girl with DS from the Ukraine. I also just did not have the finances to pay for the adoption.....so it is on hold until things are much much better. I believe Reece's Rainbow allows you to get donations from people to help adopt a child. I also heard that there are adoption grants out there somewhere.
Good Luck,
Deanna

downsyn.com has quite a few families who have adopted (actually one family is in Russia now on their first trip). Meredith would be a great resource. Her and her husband recently adopted 2 children from the Ukraine. I know she will be more than happy to help. Here's her blog. www.cornishadoptionjourney.blogspot.com/Also, I urge you to check out this blog too. I know Bethany and Kyle...and they are in Russia at this very moment. The pictures are amazing.....they have just met their daughter for the first time this week. www.dreamingonanangel.blogspot.com/Best of luck, it's wonderful you are thinking of adopting. I've heard Meredith say on many occassions....don't let the $$ stop you....there is help out there. Keep us posted

Hey, long time no write. It's been a long time, and might be again, but while I have a moment, HI TO EVERYBODY! In answer to the question, I adopted Rhienne through the state. I had him in foster care for two years then adopted him. It didn't cost me anything. Good luck to you. I really hope things work out for you.

Here's another web site to look at. www.chask.orgI don't know much about the site except it has to do with special needs adoption. Pat

We adopted our son with Down syndrome. There was no cost.
A child with a disability, an older child or a sibling group currently in foster care generally qualify for a subsidized adoption through the state. There should also be also be Medicaid insurance for the child's health care. There may also be additional funds for the child's care.
This is intended to motivate parents to adopt rather than continue foster care for the "hard to place child".
States may have their own department for children and families or what ever they call it, or they may contract out the adoption to an adoption agency. You may have to ask a lot of questions. Some agencies are making money this way, some are required to attempt to place a child in a home with as little cost to the state as possible.
As you communicate with other adoptive and special needs families you may learn of even more supports that will enable you to care for this child well with out financial strain on the family.
Many families (like ours) adopt more than one special needs child. Why?... because it's good and we're good at it.

Good info, Gwen. That is very helpful. We figure that our future holds adoption of children & possibly kids with special needs, since we already know the ropes. It's good to know that it needn't cost an arm & a leg to get it done.
